El Salvador Bitcoin Wallet Hack: Attackers Leaked Source Code

Crypto attackers are becoming increasingly sophisticated and diverse in their exploits. Hackers leaked some source code and VPN access data for Bitcoin Wallet, Chivo. Hackers latest move comes after several days of sharing the personal data of more than 5 million Salvadorans in the crypto community.

Bitcoin Wallets Hack Impact On Salvadoran Crypto Community

After leaking the personal information of the 5 million Salvadoran crypto community, the hackers released their next plan. This time, the hacking team CiberInteligenciaSV begins releasing Bitcoin Wallet Chivos source code and VPN details.

CiberInteligenciaSV communicated its plan to the Salvadoran government by releasing a part of the Bitcoin wallet source code on BreachForums, a black hat hacking crime forum.

“This time I am bringing you the code that is inside the Bitcoin Chivo Wallet ATMs in El Salvador, remember that it is a government wallet, and as you know, we do not sell, we publish everything for free for you,” CiberInteligenciaSV post.

Leaking the source code poses a significant threat to the integrity of the Bitcoin wallet system, making it effortless for hackers to gain illegal access to the users account. The hackers previously leaked the personal data of 5 million Salvadorans, including full name, unique identity number, date of birth, address, and an HD picture of every user.

Leaking almost 144GB of data nearly affected the whole adult population of El Salvador and created a fear of possible identity theft or fraud. According to DataBreaches, the leaked data was extracted from a cloud backup of a former national security advisor, Alejandro Muyshondt.

Before leaking the data, the hacker group informed about their plan through a telegram post.

“Tonight we will publish part of the source code and VPN access that belongs to Chivo Wallet, for free as always, unless one of you nosy government people wants to talk,” CiberInteligenciaSVs Telegram post reads.

Apart from the source code and VPN details, hackers also released the Codigo.rar file, which contains a compilation of code and VPN credentials.

VenariX, a local cybersecurity project, took on X to warn the crypto community and Salvadoran Government about the upcoming leak.

The Salvadoran Governments Response

Despite these hacks and fraudulent acts, the Salvadoran Government hasnt responded to the breach yet. No strict actions from the legislatives end caused more significant worry among individuals. However, the public and observers are expecting strict actions against the hackers.

El Salvador became the first country to adopt Bitcoin legally in 2021 to offset the economic influence of the local currency. As a successive step, the government launched its Bitcoin wallet, Chivo, to make selling, buying, and trading Bitcoin effortless.

The wallet was launched in 2021 and gained popularity quickly due to the bonuses. The wallet saves transaction fees and currency exchange costs and offers banking services without requiring traditional bank accounts.
