Ethiopia cuts power to Bitcoin miners as El Niño strains hydropower

Ethiopia has cut electricity supplied to Bitcoin miners to 23% of contracted levels after a 20% drop in reservoir inflows strained the countrys hydropower system. Bloomberg reported on Tuesday that El Niño had intensified dry conditions across the East African country, forcing state-owned Ethiopian Electric Power to reduce electricity supplied to mining operations while prioritizing households and manufacturers. EEP CEO Ashebir Balcha said the utility initially lowered electricity deliveries to miners to 75% of their contracted amounts before reducing them to 50% and eventually 23%. The company plans to reassess reservoir and electricity conditions in October. Further cuts remain possible if water levels do not improve, while Ethiopia could restrict electricity exports to neighboring countries if domestic supply comes under more pressure. Bitcoin miners lose access to most contracted power Bitcoin miners have become a large source of demand for Ethiopias electricity system after low-cost hydropower attracted operators looking for cheaper energy. Mining companies consumed almost one-third of the country‘s electricity output and generated 35% of EEP’s revenue during the previous fiscal year, according to Bloomberg. The latest restrictions therefore affect a customer group that has become financially important to the state power company. Ethiopias mining expansion has been built largely around its hydroelectric resources. As crypto.news

Malicious Uniswap v4 hooks are baiting DeFi traders with fake swap quotes

Liquidity aggregator 0x said on Sept. 14 that it had seen an alarming increase in malicious Uniswap v4 hooks over recent weeks, designed to quote one price and settle at another. In the most extreme trades it observed, users received as much as 50% less at execution than the amount displayed in the quote. An aggregator searches many pools, estimates their output, and typically favors the route promising the most tokens. A malicious pool can win the order by looking unusually attractive during that comparison. Uniswap v4 hooks show when the best quote becomes the attack surface In its analysis of Uniswap v4 hooks, 0x said it examined 84,163 hooks across six chains using static analysis, dynamic analysis, and settled-trade observations. In the dataset, labeled as of Sept. 11, 0x classified 19.4% as safe, 54.2% as malicious, and 26.4% as likely malicious. The report separately said 0x had observed malicious routes deliver up to half less than quoted, a maximum shortfall rather than a typical outcome. One Base hook trading the ETH/NVDAc showed 6,516 fills, including 3,946 charged fills. Fees ranged from 0% to 18%, with an 18% median when charged, and the hook collected $143,037 in total fees as of Sept. 11. Related Asset Ethereum ETH

Ethiopia cuts Bitcoin miners power by 77% amid hydropower shortage: Report

Ethiopia has reportedly reduced electricity delivered to Bitcoin miners to 23% of contracted levels as lower water inflows strain the countrys hydroelectric reservoirs. On Tuesday, Bloomberg reported that El Niño intensified dry conditions in the east African country, reducing water inflows into its reservoirs by 20%. Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) CEO Ashebir Balcha said the company cut power to miners to prioritize households and manufacturers. Balcha said EEP initially reduced deliveries to 75% of contracted levels, easing to 50% and then 23%. The company will reassess conditions in October and could impose further reductions or even restrict electricity exports to neighboring countries, according to the report. Bitcoin miners reportedly accounted for 35% of EEP‘s revenue last fiscal year and consume almost one-third of Ethiopia’s electricity output. The countrys inexpensive hydropower has attracted international miners, including Phoenix Group, which expanded its Ethiopian mining capacity to 132 megawatts in April 2025. Bitcoin mining power growth faces pressure from halvings and AI Separately, economist and The Bitcoin Standard author Saifedean Ammous said in a Tuesday X post that global Bitcoin mining electricity consumption and capital expenditure may have peaked in 2024 to 2025. Bitcoin's Coinbase premium sinks to one-month low, heres why

Bitcoins Coinbase COIN$172.04·Market Closed premium has fallen to its lowest level in four weeks, suggesting weakening U.S. demand as investors confront a setback for crypto legislation and the prospect of tighter monetary policy. The premium measures the difference between bitcoin‘s dollar price on Coinbase and its USDT price on Binance. CryptoQuant’s Coinbase Premium Index tracks that gap as a percentage of price. Tuesdays reading of around -0.07% works out to roughly $50 on a $75,900 bitcoin - a thin margin but one that points to relatively weak buying demand on the U.S. exchange. The discount has deepened to around -0.07% on Tuesday from roughly -0.02% a day earlier, as the Clarity Act failed to pass on Tuesday. That marks a reversal from late August and early September, when the premium turned positive for the first time in months, as bitcoin climbed towards $80,000. Bitcoin has since retreated to around $75,000. Coinbase premium index (CryptoQuant) Monetary policy presents another headwind. The Federal Reserve announces its decision later Wednesday, with markets widely expecting a 25-basis-point increase that would lift the federal funds target range to 3.75% to 4%. Raising rates amid an energy supply shock risks compounds the pressure on growth. Higher borrowing costs can curb demand

Italy investigates government email breach linked to Revolut data leak

Italian authorities are investigating a government email breach linked to the leak of Revolut customer data after hackers allegedly used the compromised account to obtain sensitive customer information. Polizia Postale, Italys cybercrime police, is investigating the incident for alleged unauthorized access to a computer system and computer fraud, Italian news agency ANSA reported on Tuesday. Some Italian media reports identified the compromised account as belonging to the Prefecture of Reggio Calabria. The agency later denied sending requests to Revolut, according to ANSA. Revolut declined to identify the government agency whose email was allegedly compromised and used to obtain customer data, citing an active police investigation and confidentiality obligations. “We reported this to the Italian authorities upon detection and will assist them as needed,” a Revolut spokesperson told Cointelegraph, adding that the companys systems, databases and customer funds remained secure. The compromised government email account was reportedly part of Italy‘s Posta Elettronica Certificata (PEC) system, a certified email service that gives messages the same legal value as registered mail. Italy’s CERT-AGID cybersecurity agency warned in June that PEC certifies delivery but does not guarantee the security of a messages content. The agency said it had handled more than 650 cases involving abused or illicit PEC accounts since

UK banks keep crypto limits as FCA regime nears

UK banks have retained widespread restrictions on payments to cryptocurrency exchanges as the Financial Conduct Authority prepares to open its new crypto authorization gateway on Sept. 30. The Financial Conduct Authority has published new guidance to help crypto businesses identify whether their activities will require authorization when the full UK regulatory framework begins on Oct. 25, 2027. The application period is scheduled to run from Sept. 30, 2026, through Feb. 28, 2027. The rules bring activities including qualifying stablecoin issuance, crypto trading platforms, custody, dealing, arranging transactions and staking inside the UKs financial-services regulatory framework. Existing registration under anti-money-laundering rules will not automatically convert into authorization under the new system. Bank payment restrictions sit outside that authorization process. The new framework sets standards for crypto businesses but does not introduce a crypto-specific requirement compelling retail banks to accept payments destined for exchanges. 9 of Top 10 UK Retail Banks Block or Limit Crypto Transactions UK retail banks will not be forced to lift blanket restrictions on payments routed to cryptocurrency exchanges even after the Financial Conduct Authoritys (FCA) comprehensive crypto regulatory regime takes effect in… pic.twitter.com/Zc2THLXHN6 — Wu Blockchain (@WuBlockchain) September 16, 2026 UK banks continue imposing crypto payment limits Restrictions differ considerably across British banks, ranging from
