Bitcoin ETFs bought nearly twice what miners produced in Q3—but $430 million left on Thursday

Zusammenfassung:Bitcoin ETF outflows renew the demand test as concentrated Q3 buying and falling older-holder balances complicate the supply-squeeze argument.

US spot Bitcoin ETF outflows totaled $430 million on Nov. 5, according to Farside Investors.

Bitcoin's ETF buyers added 79,800 BTC in the third quarter, against 41,300 BTC newly mined, according to 21Shares' Nov. 2 report. The comparison supports the scarcity argument, but offers limited reassurance about demand today: most of that buying arrived in two short windows, while older-holder balances fell by much more.

For Bitcoin holders assessing a supply squeeze, the unresolved question is whether fund demand persists between those buying bursts. New issuance is only one part of the picture. Coins already held by existing investors can also move, so purchases exceeding mining output do not establish how much supply buyers must absorb at a given price.

The 21Shares figures cover Q3 through Sept. 30. Aug. 17-27 and Sept. 21-25 accounted for 91% of ETF inflows measured in Bitcoin.

The same report recorded a 248,000 BTC reduction in long-term-holder balances during Q3. That larger change puts existing holdings alongside issuance in the scarcity discussion. However, it is a net balance decline, not a measured total of executed market sales.

ETF buying beat mining. Older balances still fell.

A quarter's ETF purchases exceeding issuance do not establish persistent absorption of existing holdings.

    • 21Shares reported that US spot Bitcoin ETFs added 79,800 BTC in Q3 2026, versus 41,300 BTC newly mined, using data through September 30. [1]
    • According to 21Shares, August 17-27 and September 21-25 accounted for 91% of Q3 2026 ETF inflows measured in BTC. [1]
    • 21Shares reported a 248,000 BTC reduction in long-term-holder balances during Q3 2026; that balance change is not an independently measured amount of executed market sales. [1] [2] [3]
    • Glassnode defines long-term-holder net position change as the rolling 30-day change in supply held by the cohort, with maturation into it offset against spending out of it. [2] [3]
    • ETF holdings and an age-based holder cohort are different classifications; the retained definitions do not establish that they are mutually exclusive or permit a complete supply-demand balance sheet. [1] [2] [3]

    Method

Reported BTC values shown on a common zero-to-250,000 magnitude scale; bars use absolute lengths and retain signed labels. Width = absolute BTC / 250,000 × plot width. Buying-window positions use day offsets within the 92-day quarter, inclusive endpoints. Date-band lengths do not encode flow volume. Arithmetic checked with a calculation tool.

    Scope

ETF ownership and age-based cohorts may overlap. Holder balance decline is not executed sales. These categories cannot be added into a market shortfall. All displayed figures describe historical Q3 2026.

ETF ownership and age-based holder classifications also are not established as mutually exclusive. Subtracting the balance decline from ETF purchases, or adding it to issuance as a separate block of selling, would imply an accounting precision the figures do not provide.

Glassnode's long-term-holder position metric offers a more recent directional check. Its public page showed approximately negative 151,885 BTC in a 10:39 UTC capture on Nov. 6, labeled “24 hours ago.” That relative label does not establish a particular trading session.

The metric measures the rolling 30-day change in the cohort's supply. Coins mature into the long-term group as they age, while spending moves supply out. A negative reading means spending outweighs maturation, rather than that the displayed amount was sold during one day.

Glassnode classifies holders using an entity's averaged purchasing date, with gradual weighting centered on 155 days, and excludes exchange-wallet supply. The reading therefore describes a particular cohort, rather than all potential sellers. Its rolling window also differs from Q3, preventing a direct claim that distribution has accelerated or slowed.

Bitcoin ETF outflows shift the demand test

The more persuasive recovery signal would be repeated ETF inflows alongside slower net distribution from older holders. Persistent redemptions with continued distribution would weaken the case.
