SEC Chair Nominee Gary Gensler: Crypto a 'Catalyst for Change'

In brief Gary Gensler, President Bidens pick for SEC Chair, testified before congress today as part of his confirmation hearing. And Gensler had some positive things to say about crypto. Gary Gensler—President Bidens nominee for chairman of the SEC—said today in his Senate confirmation hearing that cryptocurrencies “have been a catalyst for change.” “Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies have brought new thinking to payments and financial inclusion, but they‘ve also raised new issues of investor protection that we still need to attend to,” Gensler told Senator Mike Rounds. He went on to say that, if confirmed, he’d work to “both promote the new innovation, but also, at the core, ensure for investor protection.” Gensler, who spent nearly 20 years at Goldman Sachs before pivoting to public sector work, was chairman of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission during the Obama administration. Hes also a professor at MIT, where he teaches a course on blockchain tech and cryptocurrencies. The SEC has played an important role in regulating cryptocurrencies over the past decade. While it‘s been the commission’s view that Bitcoin isn‘t a security, and so isn’t regulated by the SEC, other coins (like XRP) have faced legal action for that very reason. Gensler said in 2018 that he thought XRP

Amazon Managed Blockchain at Last Supports Ethereum, Ending a Two-Year Tease

There are over 8,000 nodes on the Ethereum network. Amazons new management feature should increase that number. Amazon Web Services (AWS) “managed blockchain” service now supports Ethereum out of the box, some two years after the integration was first hinted at in 2018. “With this launch, AWS customers can easily provision Ethereum nodes in minutes and connect to the public Ethereum main network and test networks such as Rinkeby and Ropsten,” AWS said in a blog post Tuesday. Amazon Managed Blockchain also supports Hyperledger, a permissioned fork of the Ethereum software intended for enterprise applications. AWS previewed Ethereum support in December. Read more: Amazon Plays Its Own Game With Enterprise Blockchain “With Amazon Managed Blockchain, customers get secure networking, encryption at rest and transport, secure access to the network via standard open-source Ethereum APIs, fast and reliable syncs to the Ethereum blockchain, and durable elastic storage for ledger data,” the blog posts add. There are over 8,300 Ethereum nodes currently on the Ethereum network, according to Etherscan. Nodes keep consensus on the ledger, check transactions, and protect the network against hostile actors. A higher number of geographically and systematically separate nodes is generally considered healthy for the network. “Its an incredible signal for the value of Ethereum in

Inspired by Tesla, South Korean Crypto Moms Take the Bitcoin Plunge

While demographic studies have shown in the past that the average crypto investor is young and male, the picture in 2021 might be changing, a recent report has found, with Millenials being edged out by boomers and Generation Xers. At least that is the case in South Korea, where a new wave of “crypto moms” is becoming increasingly interested in bitcoin (BTC) and altcoins. Running with the headline “Mom‘s a BTC investor,” Maeil Kyungjae reported that people aged 40-49 are now South Korea’s leading demographic for crypto investment, quoting data from WiseApp, a researcher that analyzed statistics from the domestic market-leading crypto exchanges Bithumb and Upbit. South Korean blockchain consultant Mira Kim told Cryptonews.com that she has seen “a lot of older people” take up crypto buying in recent weeks. But does that mean there really are “Crypto moms” out there, eclipsing their children and hoping to see the token rise “to the moon” and beyond? “Yes,” said Kim. “Its a very real phenomenon.” Kim explained,“Things started to get serious after the Tesla news broke. I think it was a key moment of validation, and crucially it was followed by sustained growth. That led some older folks – many of them female –

Is Bitcoin About to Break Into Traditional Financial Models?

Despite a pronounced dip in value at the beginning of 2021, Bitcoin has continued to enjoy a stellar few weeks of late. Firstly, the market leading crypto token reached a new high of $48,635 last month, following a huge, $1.5 million (£1.1 million) investment by Elon Musks Tesla firm. This week, Bitcoins price increased again to a whopping $48,635 amid news of potential partnerships with financial giants MasterCard. Overall, the token has seen its value soar by more than 364% year-on-year, as it continues to disrupt mainstream financial models and push beyond the verge of the consumer mainstream. But will Bitcoin really disrupt and arguably break the traditional finance mould, or will it forever exist on the fringes of the fiscal services sector? Then and Now - Bitcoin During the Last 12 Months Interestingly, Bitcoin also enjoyed a stellar 2020 despite the coronavirus pandemic, rising by nearly 300% during the year and outperforming the combined gains of gold and the Dow Jones Index by a factor of 10 in the process. Bitcoin also mirrored the performance and trajectory of gold through October of last year, causing some to speculate that the asset is emerging as a relative safe-haven currency during times of economic tumult. This is borne

Cboe Files With the US SEC Again to List VanEck’s Bitcoin ETF

The US Securities and Exchange Commission has received an application from Cboe to list VanEcks already proposed Bitcoin ETF. Yet another attempt for a US-approved Bitcoin ETF is on the horizon coming from the Chicago Board Options Exchange (Cboe). The organizations filing with the SEC aims to build on a previous S-1 filing initiated by VanEck. CryptoPotato reported in late 2020 that the US investment giant with about $50 billion in AUM, VanEck, has filed for its latest S-1 form with the SEC to establish a Bitcoin ETF called The VanEck Bitcoin Trust. The company‘s application indicated that the ETF’s shares would be traded on the Cboe BZX Exchange if approved. Although the Commission has not issued a formal response yet, Cboe has interfered with the application by filing a proposal of its own. It works as an addition to the previous attempt as the proposal “builds on VanEcks earlier S-1 filing” and “represents the next steps in bringing what could be the first US Bitcoin ETF to market.” Furthermore, the filing reads that such a product would “present certain advantages for retail investors compared to buying spot bitcoin directly. The most notable advantage is the use of the Custodian to custody the Trust‘s bitcoin assets.”

Discover Financial Planning a ‘Roadmap’ for Crypto, Blockchain Products

The third-largest US credit card company is on the hunt for a crypto products strategist. Discover Financial is planning to break into the crypto space with a suite of yet-to-be-developed digital currency products, according to a new job posting. The third-largest credit card brand in the U.S. on Tuesday began searching for a Blockchain & Digital Currency Product Manager to sketch out its crypto roadmap. This new strategist position will be tasked with identifying opportunities in crypto, educating C-suite suits on the tech and managing rollout, the listing said. It is unclear how Discover might try to leverage its 57 million cards for crypto. Indeed, the Tuesday posting for an early-stage blockchain strategist makes clear that any corporate plans are still in the works. The positions exceptionally broad mission only serves to underline that Discover could take its roadmap in any number of ways. Discover did not immediately return multiple requests for comment. At the very least, the position signals Discover does not want to be left behind in the traditional financial services industrys race toward cryptocurrencies. Its financial services competitors have already jumped well ahead, with Visa and Mastercard both planning to integrate cryptos directly on their far-larger card networks.

A Beginner’s Guide to Crypto Margin Trading

With the inherent volatility of cryptocurrencies, even spot trading—where you simply buy and sell cryptocurrencies—can be thrilling. However, for the experienced trader, the risk to reward ratio could use an increase, which is where margin trading comes in. Margin trading is an advanced trading strategy that includes borrowing assets from a broker to make an investment. It lets the trader invest much more than they would usually be able to afford—even up to 100 times more, depending on the platform and what they offer—but it is also inherently riskier, as an unsuccessful trade will leave the trader liable for the total amount of the loss. In other words, if you trade at a margin of 50x, you can profit fifty times more than you would without that margin — but if you lose, you lose the entire amount you used for opening the trade. This crypto trading strategy is most often used on assets with low volatility because it is much easier to predict the price movements and stay profitable. This means that the international forex market sees the most margin trading. However, it is also used when trading stocks, commodities, and even cryptocurrencies. Some Terms You Should Know A margin is the percentage
