How Much Does It Cost to Attack Ethereum 2.0? Scientists Answer

Four scholars from the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Harvard University, Michael Neuder, Daniel J. Moroz, Rithvik Rao and David C. Parkesk, described two strategies for attacking Ethereum 2.0 Phase 0, or Beacon Chain. Malicious reorganizations, finality delays: Two attack designs for extremely powerful staker Starting from the introduction of Ethereum 2.0 architecture, the researchers revealed several scenarios for possible attacks against the network. In their paper, Harvard engineers recalled studies of sending conflicting attestations, exploring network latency issues and so on. Meanwhile, they note, an attacker can maliciously attest the wrong block, initiating so-called “private forks.” Attesting one “wrong” block would cause only minor reorganization, but this scenario could be extended to the performance of devastating attacks. Image via Arxiv The second scenario includes a delay in block finality: the hypothetical attacker could delay finality, preventing the correct block from being attested. In this scenario, the attacker needs to be recognized as a proposer of a block boundary and, therefore, the first block of the next epoch. Therefore, he/she needs to delay finality, i.e., to ensure that two consecutive blocks will not be attested in a fair manner. This scenario is less probable and far more expensive. How much does it cost? To start with,

No Fiat Conversion: Why Businesses Are Increasingly Choosing To Retain Bitcoin

Mainstream firms entering the Bitcoin market have begun to adopt the option of storing their assets in Bitcoin and boycotting the option of converting to fiat. Some of these businesses include Tesla, and most recently Oakland Athletics Suite Payment services. Both of these businesses are accepting Bitcoin payments from their consumer base, and have declared that they are uninterested in converting the payments they receive to fiat. There was no disclosure on how long it will carry on, but in the meantime, both businesses are declaring themselves official Hodlers of the asset. Why are traditional businesses refusing to sell their Bitcoins? If businesses choose to integrate Bitcoin for the sole purpose of meeting consumer demand, their risk factors are reduced. Because of Bitcoins extreme volatility, managing momentary losses can be achieved by swiftly converting payments to stablecoins or fiat. But when businesses choose to overlook the potential risk they take, when they choose to hold Bitcoin, it could mean that these firms are believers in the benchmark cryptocurrency. This could be as a result of the companys heads or executives being Bitcoin proponents themselves. This is the case with Oakland As Dave Kaval, who recently revealed that the Baseball club is a strong believer in

Forget GIFs, NFTs Are Essential Infrastructure

NFTs provide one of the best tools ever invented for making the most of scarce resources, says EYs blockchain leader. William Gibson famously remarked that the future is already here, its just not evenly distributed. So we are seeing with the immense popularity of non-fungible tokens (NFTs). For decades, science fiction writers have tried to imagine what a post-scarcity society might be like, but I suspect none of them predicted that, in the absence of urgent material needs, we might go about re-inventing scarcity for its own sake. Much of the focus on NFTs has been about their role as ownership tokens for unique pieces of digital art. From tweets to GIFs to video highlights, people may soon discover there is an infinite supply of limited editions and only a few of these may stand the test of time. This kind of discovery process is a normal part of growing markets and it will be as true in the digital world for art as it has been in the physical world. But the post-scarcity world is not evenly distributed and it can be jarring to watch this play out in the middle of a pandemic with so many people unemployed and hungry. My own belief

BNB vs ETH: The Future of the Crypto Industry

The cryptocurrency and blockchain industry is often abuzz with new ideas and concepts, ranging from NFTs to DeFi, but even complete newbies already realize that the space itself is vastly larger than even the sum of its parts. Still, the value of a project is often seen through its price alone, while its other advantages are overlooked or poorly understood. Binance Coin (BNB), the token powering Binance Smart Chain, is one such example: often compared to ETH due to both coins serving a similar purpose, it is often considered inferior due to its place just under Ethereum by market cap. To understand whether this comparison is even justified, we will go through the similarities and differences between the two. Ecosystem ETH powers the Ethereum ecosystem, which consists of many different projects built upon it, mainly during the 2017-18 ICO boom. According to State of the DApps, out of around 2.7k dapps, most of them are games, followed by gambling, while finance comes in third. BNB, meanwhile, has two different ecosystems: one in centralized finance (CeFi), in the cryptocurrency exchange Binance, and one in decentralized finance (DeFi), as the native token of Binance Smart Chain. Number of Coins Currently, there are more than 115 million ETH in

Indian Crypto Firms Suggest Policy Ideas to Government Ahead of Possible Ban

Crypto exchanges in India are planning to present the countrys government and central bank with their vision for a productive regulatory regime, The Economic Times reported Tuesday. The group – including Unocoin, WazirX, CoinDCX, Paxful, Pocketbits, ZebPay and Coinswitch – compiled a package of documents explaining the current state of the crypto industry in India and possible ways to regulate it. The industry entreaty comes as Indian lawmakers float a potential ban of private cryptocurrencies. The presentation, reviewed by CoinDesk, says India currently has more than 10 million crypto users, over half-a-million day traders and more than 3,000 people employed in the crypto industry. The presentation mentions the money-laundering and environmental concerns related to cryptocurrencies and suggests a package of policy proposals. The exchanges suggested research on potential consequences if India bans crypto, proposals on the upcoming regulation, a draft code of conduct for crypto exchanges to adopt and an overview of crypto regulation practices around the world. India is looking to pass its first-ever cryptocurrency legislation, though Sitharaman partly soothed industry fears of overreach. The finance minister said on March 15 the government will still “allow certain windows for people to do experiments on the blockchain, bitcoin or cryptocurrency.” However, around the same time, rumors

$11 Billion in ‘Fake’ Uniswap Volume Causes DeFi Project and DEX to Clash

A day after helping Uniswap set a new, albeit short-lived and dubious, record for daily transaction volume, Delta.financial has done it again—to the chagrin of Uniswap, one of the largest decentralized exchanges in the world. Delta is a DeFi protocol for removing volatility from options trading by stabilizing liquidity. An anonymous developer with the CORE team, which built Delta, has released a smart contract that allowed nearly $11 billion in trading volume for a single token to be registered over the last 24 hours on Uniswap. That would be a new record, though its unlikely it will stand; Uniswap Info, an analytics site, yesterday invalidated Delta volume. The developers move threatens to render Uniswap statistics meaningless in an industry where transparency is a currency, all over a somewhat manufactured debate over decentralization. DeFi refers to decentralized finance protocols that allow people to trade assets, earn interest, borrow funds, and make bets without a bank, broker, or bookie. Uniswap, a key cog in Ethereums DeFi ecosystem, is one of the largest decentralized exchanges in the world, with over $4 billion in value locked into the protocol in the form of tradable cryptocurrencies. It allows people to swap assets with other people directly without placing

This is How Cardano Switches to Decentralization Securely, Team Explains

On March 31, Cardano will become a fully decentralized platform, this means that over 1,800 community pools will be responsible for block production. Since the release of the Shelley update in July 2020, Cardano was slightly criticized by the DeFi community for issuing their own blocks while its SPO (stake pool operator) was being developed, instead of leaving the production to the community. Now the protocol is ready to become a fully decentralized platform. Cardanos Launch for Decentralisation The team behind the protocol explained per a blog post how Cardano is switching to full decentralization securely. According to the document, Ouroboros, Cardanos proof-of-stake (PoS) protocol is organized with 120 hour periods (5 days). These periods are called “epochs” and they update the stake distribution and the leadership of cryptographic nonces. By now, its proof of correctness has proven promising results by showing a steady state. Every five days an unpredictable leadership nonce is selected to ensure unpredictability. The Ouroboros protocol provides an identified bitstring on the blockchain to subsequent leadership nonces through an “entropy addition mechanism.” Every epoch, voters will be required to have a digitally signed vote from genesis delegators to participate in the process. The platform will put this mechanism into test in

Study Finds South Koreans Aged 20-39 Mainly Invest up to $100 in Cryptocurrencies

South Koreas “crypto boom” is a term that the local media has widely adopted to refer to the current hype seen across the Asian nation. In fact, a recent study unveiled a rising trend in the number of South Koreans making small-scale crypto investments. New Crypto Investors Seem Unafraid of Strict Regulations According to the “Virtual Currency App Market Analysis” research made by big data firm IGA Works, quoted by Edaily, almost 60% of the newest crypto investors in the country are aged 20-30. Remarkably, such a segment of traders often prefers to allocate “smaller amounts” of money into cryptos, specifically up to $100. But the study went more in-depth and clarified that South Korean crypto investors aged 20 through 30 are looking for bitcoin (BTC) and “top 10-by-market-cap altcoins” investments. A trader identified just as “Mr. A” claimed that he allocates around 100,000 Korean won ($88) every month from his payday on BTC and such altcoins. IGA Works says that the number of monthly cryptocurrency app users crossed the three million thresholds in February “for the first time.” That said, the firm believes such a figure is a milestone because fears of stricter regulations on domestic exchanges are not pushing away the investors. Still, experts

Adam Back unveils Blockstream’s new Bitcoin mining security token

Canadian-based Blockchain tech company Blockstream announced the launch of a security token backed by the companys mining production on March 29. It offers an alternative to investing in Bitcoin mining stocks, with the company providing non-US qualified investors exposure to Bitcoin mining through the Blockstream Mining Note security token. BMN represents 2,000 terahash per second of hashrate from Blockstreams mining facilities. The Bitcoin mined for BMN will be held in cold storage for three years, and will be distributed to the final token holders at the end of that time frame. Blockstream plans to begin BMN mining operations by July 9, with the following tranches expected to be released in the third quarter of this year. The BMN security token offering, or STO, will be held on STOKR, a European investment marketplace for alternative digital assets. The first tranche of security tokens will be on offer from April 7, and are priced at roughly $240,000 each, which is also the minimum investment. In the announcement published on Blockstreams website, CEO Adam Back and CIO Chris Cook emphasized the benefits of gaining exposure to the security token in comparison to investing in mining infrastructure: “By packaging mining in a tradable token, the BMN allows investors more flexibility
