Fed Inflation Metric Soars To Three Decade High, What It Means For Bitcoin

Is Hyperinflation On The Way? The PCE measures price changes in consumer goods and services exchanged in the U.S. economy. Along with the Consumer Price Index (CPI), the PCE is used by the Fed to make monetary policy. However, when compiling the PCE, the Bureau of Economic Analysis excludes food and energy costs because they are deemed too volatile. Some critics argue that this policy underestimates the true cost of living. “A measure of prices that people living in the United States, or those buying on their behalf, pay for goods and services. Its sometimes called the core PCE price index, because two categories that can have price swings – food and energy – are left out to make underlying inflation easier to see.” Nonetheless, the PCE has spiked to its highest level in 30 years. Against a backdrop of record government spending, there are real fears that inflation risks will not be “transitory,” as Fed Governor Lael Brainard mentioned earlier this month to quieten concerns. Back in February, U.S investor Michael Burry, who predicted the U.S. housing bubble, warned that he expects the onset of rapid and out-of-control inflation, also known as hyperinflation. Looking to history, Burry draws parallels with post-WWI Germany, in which markets

3 reasons why Polygon (MATIC) outperformed Bitcoin and major cryptos this week

MATIC, the native cryptocurrency of Polygon, rose by over 35% in the past week due to three reasons. Polygon (MATIC) is on a tear. In the past seven days, it has gained 35% in the past seven days, outperformed every major cryptocurrency apart from Uniswap. There are several big reasons behind the strong uptrend of MATIC, including the growing hype around Polygon, Google BigQuery announcement, and Mark Cubans investment. Growing sentiment and hype around Polygon On Feb. 9, Matic first announced its plans to rebrand to Polygon. At the time, they brought in promising metaverse projects and integrated Matic Plasma Chain. By implementing Plasma Chains, Polygon was able to provide a layer one blockchain network with built-in scaling solutions for projects. The Polygon team said in February: “We implemented and offered Matic Plasma Chains, a production-ready Ethereum Layer2, predicates-based Plasma implementation; We implemented and offered Matic PoS Chain, a permissionless, EVM-compatible, PoS-secured Ethereum sidechain which relies on strong Ethereum security for validator staking and checkpoints; Onboarded 80+ amazing applications, including Polymarket, Aavegotchi, Neon District, Skyweaver, Cometh, EasyFi with more being added everyday.” Since then, Polygon has become a major layer-one blockchain project, specifically for metaverse projects with the numbers of users skyrocketing. The growing fundamentals seem to also be

Binance Smart Chain DeFi project Burgerswap hacked for $7 million

BurgerSwap, a decentralized finance (DeFi) platform based on smart contracts network Binance Smart Chain (BSC), fell victim to a so-called flash loan attack today, allowing the malicious actor to get away with roughly $7.2 million worth of tokens. Another day, another DeFi hacked “BurgerSwap Flash Loan Attack Details: At around 3 am on May 28th (UTC+8) #BurgerSwap on the BSC chain encountered a flash loan attack; $7.2M was stolen from #BurgerSwap in 14 transactions,” the project tweeted. According to BurgerSwap, the hacker(s) created their own “fake coin”—which can be done by anyone on BSC—and used it to form a trading pair with the platforms BURGER token. “By adjusting the routing, the attacker created $BURGER - Fake Coin - $WBNB routing; through $BURGER - Fake Coin trading pair, attacker re-entered BurgerSwap through Fake Coin & manipulated a number of reserve0 and reserve1 in the pairs contract, causing the price to change,” the developers explained. Then, the attacker took a flash loan of 6,000 Binance Coin (BNB) from PancakeSwap, another BSC-based DeFi platform, and swapped the funds for 92,000 BURGER tokens. After that, they added 100 “fake tokens” and 45,000 BURGER to a liquidity pool and used it to exchange the “fake tokens” for 4,400 BNB. “Because of

UAE authority issues warning about Dubai Coin

As a tech-friendly region, Dubai is never short of new and promising projects, including crypto and blockchain, but the influx of new cryptocurrencies makes it harder for newcomers to distinguish shady campaigns from reliable ones. The Dubai Media Office announced that the authorities have never approved a digital currency named Dubai Coin, which saw a 1,000% jump when the project launched as “the official digital currency of Dubai” earlier this week. “Its not the official cryptocurrency of the city,” the announcement warns. “The website promoting Dubai Coin is an elaborate phishing campaign that is designed to steal personal information from its visitors.” Following the announcement, major listing platforms CoinMarketCap and CoinGecko have removed Dubai Coin from their pages. The price of the coin crashed by more than 50% since the official statement, according to data from TradingView. The now-defunct website of Dubai Coin claims that its a project powered by ArabianChain Technology, a public blockchain developed in the region. ArabianChain was quick to announce, one day prior to the officials, that the Dubai Coin website is not related to the company. They also called the project website a scam. According to the ArabianChain website, DBIX is the native digital currency of the platform. But its

MakerDAO Unveils Scaling and Multi-Chain Strategy Roadmap

The largest decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol, MakerDAO, has revealed its scaling strategies for moving forwards in a multi-chain environment. In a lengthy post on the MakerDAO governance forum on May 27, a protocol core engineer detailed the current state of the Layer 2 and multi-chain ecosystem. At the end of it, the DeFi lending platform highlighted its potential plans for going forward in this rapidly evolving landscape. The purpose of the post was to engage with the broader community on the specific topic, gather feedback regarding the various opportunities, and: “Align technical and development resources to agree on a strategy for how MakerDAO should embrace this new and complex landscape.” Scaling is essential There was a lot of in-depth information on current scaling and crypto-bridge solutions, but it highlighted the need to expand from Ethereum which is the current standard: “Ethereum is likely to become a global settlement layer (think of it as the Manhattan of crypto), in this context it is unreasonable to assume that everybody will fit into a single ”city“ where property prices skyrocket.” It added that instead, people with growing DeFi needs will establish new, thriving communities by creating their own “islands.” It claims that MakerDAO is uniquely positioned to take advantage of the

Bank of Japan governor slams Bitcoin, questions its usage in settlements

Bank of Japan governor Haruhiko Kuroda questioned Bitcoins use case during an interview yesterday, business news outlet Bloomberg reported. The bank is currently testing a ‘digital yen,’ the digital version of its fiat currency, but remains shaky on the topic of cryptocurrencies. “Most of the trading is speculative and volatility is extraordinarily high,” Kuroda said, questioning the use of Bitcoin as a means of investment compared to traditional financial assets. “Its barely used as a means of settlement,” he added. The comments are similar to those echoed by Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell from earlier this year when he said the crypto market is largely a vehicle for speculation. Stablecoins but no Bitcoin The Bank of Japan has largely allowed public usage of cryptocurrencies and has generally been favorable towards crypto businesses like exchange services and wallets. Over $1 billion was traded on local exchanges yesterday alone, as per data from CoinGecko, with Bitcoin, Ethereum, and MonaCoin considered crowd favorites. But the bank has largely shifted its focus on stablecoins—digital currencies pegged on a 1:1 basis with fiat currency, such as the US dollar—in the past year. Reports suggest the digital yen is already undergoing limited testing in a sandbox environment, accentuated by the ongoing coronavirus panic

Vitalik Doubles Down on Proof-of-Stake: It Could Solve Bitcoin’s Problems

Competitors are milking Elon Musk‘s misconceptions about Bitcoin’s energy consumption for all their worth. The general public and legacy media won‘t shut up about this previously resolved can of worms. And when Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, received the question, he didn’t hesitate. Fortune quotes Buterin going all-in for Proof-Of-Stake, his consensus mechanism of choice: “Proof-of-stake is a solution to the [environmental issues] of Bitcoin—which needs far less resources to maintain,” Buterin said at the StartmeupHK virtual festival in Hong Kong. When pressed with Ethereum still being under a Proof-Of-Work consensus mechanism, Buterin said that the Ethereum network will reduce its emissions “by a factor of 100, or even 10,000” once they switch it to PoS. When pressed for a date, Buterin said: “[We thought] it would take one year to [implement] POS… but it actually [has] taken around six years” due to the complexity of building such a model. NFT volume has more than tripled — even amid price crash — as Meme.com raises $5M

The NFT sector has seen exponential growth, tripling in transactions since January and pushing through the market crash this month. The popularity of non-fungible tokens, or NFTs, shows little sign of slowing down, despite the extraordinary marketwide crash that wiped more than $1 trillion off the crypto market cap. According to a report by decentralized app marketplace DappRadar, the average number of NFT sales rose almost 300%, from 21,815 per day in January, to 82,373 in May (so far). This number rose even higher as crypto prices started to plummet on May 12, with sales surging to almost 94,000 NFT transactions a day. The crypto market crash, which created a widespread panic as almost 1 million leverage trades got liquidated, also resulted in serious congestion and exorbitant transaction fees across the Ethereum network. These surging gas fees didnt deter NFT traders, however, with many turning to other marketplaces on alternate blockchains like the Atomic Market on the EOSIO blockchain. Its daily transaction volume of 20,296 accounts is higher than any other NFT marketplace (excluding NBA Top Shot). Top 5 NFT Marketplace transactions over time. Carbon-neutral Bitcoin funds gain traction as investors seek greener crypto

Steps are being taken to ensure green Bitcoin options for investors, but this may only serve as a short-term solution to a long-term problem. Bitcoin (BTC) has been a hot topic of discussion lately even for those outside the core crypto community, but unfortunately, its not for the best of reasons. In particular, the amount of energy required to mine Bitcoin has created concerns for investors who were considering BTC as an option to diversify. According to the Cambridge Center for Alternative Finance, Bitcoin currently consumes around 110 terawatt-hours per year. A Harvard Business Review article further noted that this equates to 0.55% of global electricity production, which is roughly equivalent to that of a small county. Although this is the case, it‘s important to point out that any industry that adds value to society will likely have an environmental impact. Yet with the rise of global warming and other environmental concerns today, it’s become crucial for the crypto sector to recognize the amount of energy consumption required to mine Bitcoin. As this concern is brought to fruition, individuals within the cryptocurrency community can then come up with solutions to combat this challenge moving forward. Dfinity responds to Internet Computer decentralization and privacy concerns

Dfinity, the team behind the Internet Computer protocol, or ICP, has fired back at critics of its decentralization and privacy features in an “Ask Me Anything” on Reddit yesterday. The team sought to assure that the projects foundation does not have control over the majority of voting power, emphasizing that decentralization is a priority for the network as it moves forward. The project aims to replace the public internet with a distributed network of data centers, nodes, subnets and users coordinated through the Network Nervous System, or NNS. The NNS decides which nodes can join Dfinity‘s network, disciplines misbehaving nodes, and facilitates communications between the ICP’s various components and participants. However, the NNS has been the subject of criticism, with users expressing concerns regarding the centralization of voting power, the closed-course and patented code underpinning the protocol, a lack of transparency regarding data collection, and the single point of failure created by the NNS design. Some have expressed qualms about NNS voting rights accruing over time, fearing that the system guarantees Dfinitys foundation and its early backers will maintain centralized control over the network in the future. Responding to concerns about the projects lack of decentralization, Dfinity researcher, Jens Camenisch, said: “The end goal is
