SEC Chief says he is intrigued by crypto, but can’t overlook investor protection

The Security and Exchange Commission in the US has maintained that it would work towards greater investor protection plans in the coming days. Gary Gensler during an interview with Bloomberg revealed that his deep interest in the subject wont come in the way of necessary regulatory oversight. Gensler was expected to have a crypto-friendly approach because of his deep understanding of the subject, but his early testimonies and actions indicate that he would maintain a similar stance to his predecessor.  “While I‘m neutral on the technology, even intrigued—I spent three years teaching it, leaning into it—I’m not neutral about investor protection. If somebody wants to speculate, thats their choice, but we have a role as a nation to protect those investors against fraud.”  Gensler also reinstated the need for bringing the crypto market under the jurisdiction of the SEC. He said there are crypto assets like Bitcoin which act as currencies but are considered a commodity, but there are thousands of other tokens which are definitely Security and thus must comply with SEC rules. Hong Kong Cryptocurrency Crime on the Rise: Victims Lost Nearly $30M in 2021 So Far

The scale of losses from digital asset scams in Hong Kong surged to record levels as the local police detected 496 such cases in the first six months of this year. Victims parted with over $27 million, with one individual losing nearly $16 million. Square’s Cash App Saw 3x Revenue Increase From the Bitcoin Services in Q2 2021

The Bitcoin services on Square and Cash App saw massive growth in Q2 2021, resulting in nearly $3 billion in revenue for the company.  Square, the financial service company run by the BTC bull Jack Dorsey, has nearly doubled its gross profit in the second quarter of 2021 compared to the same part of last year. Interestingly, a substantial part of that increase came from the companys Bitcoin-related services, which have blossomed since the start of 2021.   Squares Gross Profit Skyrockets  The firm, based in San Francisco, announced the impressive numbers in its Q2 2021 report sent to investors recently. Perhaps most notably, the results show a record gross profit of $1.14 billion, which is a 91% year-over-year increase. Skybridge Capital becomes latest firm to buy carbon credits for its Bitcoin holdings

Skybridge Capital, a global multi-asset investment firm that has filed for Bitcoin and Ether Exchange Traded Funds (ETF), has partnered with Moss Earth to offset its carbon footprint generated from its Bitcoin holdings. The firm bought carbon credits to offset approximately 38,436 tons of carbon. The investment firm joins the growing league of crypto platforms that have bought carbon credits worth millions of dollars to ensure Bitcoin is a green investment.  Anthony Scaramucci, Founder and Managing Partner of SkyBridge said the step was intended to ensure ESG-focused investors dont shy away from Bitcoin. NFT Craze Erupts, With CryptoPunks Trading Volume Surging 1,270% in Just One Week

The non-fungible token (NFT) project CryptoPunks is seeing a massive surge in trading volume over the last seven days.  DappRadar, which tracks and analyzes decentralized apps, shows that the punk-movement-inspired crypto project hit over $120 million in trading volume for a 1,270% surge over the last seven days.  CryptoPunks, one of the first NFT projects on Ethereum (ETH), is a collection of 10,000 24×24, 8-bit-style pixel art images of male and female characters inspired by the London punk movement of the 1970s. Each CryptoPunk is unique, but some have rarer features than others.  After launching the project in 2017, Larva Labs, the creator of the project, initially offered the CryptoPunks for free to anyone with an Ethereum wallet.  According to Larva Labs, the total value of all CryptoPunk sales stands at 263,180 ETH, worth about $670.29 million.  The CryptoPunk mania began on Friday as one unknown Ethereum whale initiated a buying spree of the digital characters. Ethereum miner revenue higher than Bitcoin's for third month running

Ethereum miners have seen higher revenues than Bitcoin miners for three months in a row, the longest stretch in history.  According to The Blocks Data Dashboard, Ethereum miners brought in $1.03 billion in revenue during July, a slight decline from the previous month.  In their turn, Bitcoin miners brought in $971.8 million in revenue last month — more than $100 million compared to June.  While transaction fees have remained a significant source of income for Ethereum miners, the same cannot be said for Bitcoin. Transaction fees accounted for just 3.1% of Bitcoin mining revenue last month.  Mining revenue is a dollar value estimate of the proceeds made by blockchain miners. Its calculated by taking the current mining rewards, plus transaction fees per block and multiplying that by the price of the asset during the month. It does not take into account any costs, such as electricity, other operating costs or taxes paid by miners.
