Arizona Bill Aims to Make Bitcoin Legal Tender

Key Takeaways A bill recently put forward in Arizona aims to turn Bitcoin into a form of legal tender within the state. The bill is unlikely to succeed, as the U.S. constitution seemingly prevents states from declaring assets legal tender. The bill was put forward by Senator Wendy Rogers, a politician recently placed at the top of an extremist rhetoric list. An Arizona senator has put forward a bill that aims to turn Bitcoin into legal tender in the state. Bill Intends to Amend Arizona Statues The one-page filing, numbered SB1341, would amend Arizona Revised Statutes to include Bitcoin as a form of legal tender. The filing mentions Bitcoin specifically without referring to other cryptocurrencies, calling it the “decentralized peer-to-peer digital currency…maintained on the Bitcoin blockchain.” It also draws attention to Bitcoin mining, noting that “new units … are generated by the computational solution of mathematical problems” and notes that Bitcoin works apart from central banks. EU seeks to develop a government DNS resolver, block “illegal content”

In a document made public earlier this month the European Commission published a call-for-proposal for a European government controlled DNS resolver service. The reasoning behind the proposal is to protect the privacy of end-users and keep them secure by applying filtering functions to block malware, phishing and other cyber security threats. However, the proposal also suggests that the DNS resolver, named DNS4EU, should have the capacity to block “illegal content” as well. The Domain Name System (DNS) is a world-wide, distributed database that maps hard-to-remember ip-addresses to human readable domain names like cryptoslate.com. The DNS system has been around since the early days of the internet and is a fundamental part of the internet infrastructure. EU wants independence from American services The proposal to develop an EU-based DNS resolver, the part of the DNS system that does the lookup of ip-addresses, is perhaps best viewed through the lens of Europes endeavor toward being less dependent on non-european service providers of crucial digital infrastructure, be it cloud services or, as in the case of DNS, global network services. This has been a clear and open strategy of the EU for many years, and it‘s no secret that, for obvious reasons, “non-european” is a polite

Goldman Sachs Explains Why Bitcoin Is Extremely Vulnerable to Rate Hikes

While the idea of reaching mainstream adoption has always been enticing for the cryptocurrency community, it has some downsides. In a recent research note, a group of Goldman Sachs analysts helmed by Zach Pandl writes that the flagship cryptocurrencys increasing presence in the traditional financial sector has made it increasingly susceptible to macroeconomic factors. This means that the crypto market is now beholden to the monetary policy of the Federal Reserve, which diminishes the assets supposed diversification properties. Earlier this month, the correlation between Bitcoin and the Nasdaq Composite index reached a new all-time high, with both cryptocurrencies and stocks enduring a major sell-off. The analysts attribute this phenomenon to the growing mainstream acceptance of cryptocurrencies: “Over the last two years, as Bitcoin has seen wider mainstream adoption, its correlation with macro assets has picked up.” As Goldman points out, Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies “are not immune” to the Feds quantitative tightening policy. As reported, the Fed has signaled that it will hike the benchmark short-term interest rate for the first time this March after years of extremely accommodating monetary policy. The CNBC Fed Survey predicts that the central bank is expected to increase rates at least three times this year. Goldman predicts that the Fed
