North Korea, NFTs and a hit video game: inside a $500m cryptocurrency theft

Late last month, hackers made off with what was then worth more than $500m from the systems of cryptocurrency network Ronin, in what is believed to be the second-largest cryptocurrency theft on record. Ronin was a juicy target for a hacker. The blockchain project supports the wildly popular Axie Infinity video game, which with an estimated 8 million players has drawn comparisons to action-driven collecting games like Pokémon Go. Axie Infinity is hot and involves substantial sums of money. Players purchase creatures called Axies in the form of NFTs, unique digital assets known as non-fungible tokens. The creatures can breed, battle and even be exchanged for cold, hard cash. The game has swelled in popularity as players see the potential to earn real money. In 2020, one 22-year-old player from the Philippines reportedly bought two apartments in Manila with his earnings from the game. Last year, another player said he earned more through Axie Infinity and other online games than from his full-time job at Goldman Sachs. But the underpinnings of the game face significant security challenges. To play, gamers must move their money from Ethereum to Ronin on a blockchain “bridge” system. Ronin is a “sidechain” of Ethereum – a scaling solution that

How Dogecoin could become the currency of the internet according to Robinhood CEO

Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev puts together a case for how Dogecoin can become the internet‘s native currency. Since Robinhood added send/receive DOGE functionality, Tenev said he’s been thinking about “what that would take.” Previously, critics panned the platform as a walled garden, as it did not allow the transfer of cryptocurrencies in or out of the app. However, after months of talking about adding this feature, the company rolled it out last week. Nonetheless, the path to turning Dogecoin into the internets currency will take more than unlocking the tokens held on a single platform.Dogecoin gets serious by building utility Despite being known as a meme coin, the Dogecoin Foundation announced plans to bring utility to DOGE at the tail end of last year. To revive interest in the project, the foundation said plans are in place to turn DOGE into a payment mechanism and “a serious universal currency for people.” They revealed a series of projects to make this happen, including upgrading its desktop wallet API interface, “community staking,” and network diversification for faster nodes. The ultimate goal is to increase the usefulness of DOGE by improving its technology. How would DOGE become the money of the internet? Pivoting to payments is fraught with technical challenges,

Cardano’s Charles Hoskinson offers to help build a decentralized Twitter

Cardano’s founder Charles Hoskinson has told Elon Musk that he’s willing to help him build a decentralized version of Twitter. This is coming after Musk submitted a $43 billion offer to assume full control of the popular social media platform with the intent of taking it private and protecting free speech.Musk is no longer Twitter’s largest shareholder Musk’s offer has elicited different reactions from the board, with one key shareholder, Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Al Saud, rejecting the offer while another member of the board increased its holdings of Twitter stocks to over 10%. With this move, Musk is no longer the largest shareholder of the social media platform, as his holdings pale against that of the Vanguard Group.Crypto community reacts Twitter’s crypto community, however, has derided Hoskinson’s offer, meeting it with different snide jokes about how long it would take him to build the platform. The chief architect of Telos blockchain, Douglas Horn, predicted that it won’t be ready until 2035. Another user stated that if it’s anything similar to what Hoskinson has built before, it won’t scale. These comments refer to the several issues that have plagued Cardano blockchain since its launch. Although Cardano has seen significant development in recent

This week, financial regulators in Texas and Alabama sent cease and desist orders to Martin Schwarzberger and Finn Ruben Warnke, cofounders of Sands Vegas Casino Club. The pair offered 11,111 NFTs for sale, promising that buyers would share in future casino profits. On its website, Sands Vegas Casino Club says it will distribute 50 percent of profits to NFT holders as “creator earnings,” estimating these could be as high as $81,000 per year. Bitcoin, Ethereum Technical Analysis: ETH Remains Close to Support of $3,000 on Good Friday

Bitcoin Bitcoin was trading lower during Fridays session, as volatility in crypto markets somewhat eased as a result of the Easter break. Following a high of $41,245.49 on Thursday, BTC/USD is down by 2%, dropping to a low of $39,695.74 in the process. Todays drop pushed prices closer to the long-term floor of $39,600, however BTC bounced back, with the move now appearing to be a false breakout. Now trading around $40,200, bulls remain set on keeping prices above $40,000, despite the momentum of the 10-day and 25-day moving averages mainly being bearish. The 14-day RSI also continues to track in oversold territory, after failing to break out of the 42.65 resistance level earlier this week. Looking at the chart, we may continue to see more price consolidation, until a breakout occurs on either the floor of 38, or ceiling of 42 on the RSI indicator.Ethereum Like bitcoin, ethereum also traded near its long-term support point of $3,000 on Friday, following a failed attempt to move past a key resistance level. Thursday saw ETH/USD fail to break out of its ceiling at $3,150, which then resulted in prices falling back towards support of $3,000. As a result of this, ETH dropped to an intraday low of $2,988.44 earlier in

The move erased an impulse move higher from earlier in the week, underscoring the lack of bullish market momentum despite conspicuous demand for Bitcoin among institutional buyers. For popular trader Crypto Ed, there was reason to believe that further downside would soon ensue. Current levels, he warned viewers in his latest YouTube update, did not constitute a suitable ground for a long position. “With the upcoming weekend, I would be very careful longing here,” he summarized. In the event, BTC/USD reached around $40,400 before reversing to trade at around $40,150 at the time of writing on April 15. Bitcoin (BTC) Drops to $40,000 After Creating Bearish Engulfing Candlestick

Bitcoin began to increase on April 11 and proceeded to reach a local high of $41,561 on April 13. However, it was rejected and decreased sharply the next day. This decrease created a bearish engulfing candlestick (highlighted). This is a type of candlestick pattern in which the entire previous increase is negated within one day. Following the creation of this pattern, further decreases could occur.Bearish technical indicators The daily time frame paints a bearish outlook for BTC due to the decreasing MACD and RSI. The former is already below 50 while the latter is negative. These are considered signs of a bearish trend and suggest new lows are likely. The six-hour time frame gives some signs of a relief rally. It shows that the RSI is extremely oversold and has begun to move upwards. Its trendline is also still intact. A similar occurrence is visible in the MACD. If the BTC price were to make a lower low, it would likely generate a significant bullish divergence as a result.BTC wave count analysis The long-term wave count suggests that an eventual upward move toward $50,000 is expected. However, BTC is still correcting in what seems to be an A-B-C structure (red). So, a potential target for

Report: Russian Oligarchs Can’t Evade Sanctions Due to Crypto Market Liquidity Issues

IN BRIEF Crypto markets dont have the liquidity to support Russian sanctions evasion, according to Chainalysis. The report outlined three different metrics used to calculate liquidity in crypto markets. There is an estimated $800 billion in funds held offshore by sanctioned Russian elites. Addressing recent speculation that Russian oligarchs have used cryptocurrency to avoid sanctions, blockchain analysis firm Chainalysis released their latest report which may come at a surprise to many. The report, published on Wednesday, relied upon a 2017 study by the National Economic Bureau, which estimated that Russian oligarchs hold nearly $800 billion in offshore funds. The study measured three different metrics for calculating liquidity across crypto markets. ‘Free Float’ model The first model, known as ‘free float,’ measures the total value of a particular crypto asset held by liquid individuals or exchanges for purposes of liquidity in cryptocurrency markets. According to the report, Chainalysis found that after looking at 19 different exchanges, it would be near impossible to move that much amount of money without crashing the price of Bitcoin. Specifically, Bitcoins price would decrease by 10% after the sale of $1.5 billion in Bitcoin. Combined, the free float of Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and Tether (USDT), who have the largest market cap by total supply,

The SEC wants better corporate disclosures about hacks

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has proposed new cybersecurity risk management rules for corporations that would require them to be more transparent with customer disclosures. The new rules would be implemented as amendments to various forms regarding cybersecurity disclosures and would specifically target investment advisers, investment funds, and business development companies. No more hiding cybersecurity hacks Introducing stricter regulation regarding cybersecurity disclosures isnt a new effort from the SEC. In 2018, former SEC Commissioner Robert J. Jackson Jr. said that current disclosure requirements “erred on the side of nondisclosure” and often left investors in the dark when companies experienced hacks or other cybersecurity attacks. Currently, company management is only required to keep boards informed about cybersecurity issues, with no obligation to share them with investors or other customers. However, a joint 2021 report showed that in 2020, only 17% of Fortune 100 companies surveyed reported cybersecurity issues to board members annually or quarterly. The SEC seems eager to change this as it spent the better part of 2022 introducing various proposals that — if passed — would require public companies to report on cyber attacks and incidents. This is the case with the Cybersecurity Risk Management for Investment Advisers, Registered Investment Companies, and Business
