State Department names Bitcoin Policy Institute partner amid market slump

The Bitcoin Policy Institute (BPI) has been included by the US State Department as one of the founding partners in its new diplomatic initiative. This suggests that Washington is realizing the key role of Bitcoin in its strategic toolkit and is hence moving towards its increasing acceptance, at a time when institutional appetite for digital assets continues to be subdued. This move is unlikely to bring about any substantial changes. However, it still stands as an important signal about the rising importance of Bitcoin in the US policy-making board, even if the market players are not yet ready to let their guard down and enjoy the various investment opportunities that cryptocurrencies can bring. A signal for holders, not a catalyst for price According to CoinMarketCap, Bitcoin (BTC) had a value of approximately $64,000 at the time this article was published, which marks a decrease of around 2% from the previous 24 hours. The lack of substantial reaction was anticipated since Freedom Tech Excellence Program (FTEP) is more of a fellowship program instead of a policy change, government procurement of Bitcoin or stimulus measure. Despite that the announcement is meaningful in the long term. The inclusion of Bitcoin supporters in the State Departments digital freedom

Enjoy Bitcoins Rally Now, but Brace for a Painful August: Analyst

Will history repeat in August with another leg down? Although it was stopped at its monthly peak of $67,000 earlier this week, July has gone quite favorably for the primary cryptocurrency for now, showing a double-digit surge from its early low of under $58,000 to roughly $65,000 as of press time. However, popular analyst Ali Martinez brought up a painful historical pattern suggesting that the bears are about to return in August. Good July, Bad August? We know that historical performance rarely translates into successful price predictions. However, BTCs moves in July have largely aligned with almost all previous Julys. As such, the warning from Martinez should be taken under careful consideration. The analyst noted that investors should “enjoy the current rally,” but stop and take a look at the seasonal trend. He added that every single August since 2022 has been in the red, which is confirmed by data from CoinGlass. This streak of four consecutive Augusts with retracements brought some violent declines, such as the 14% drop in 2022 and the 11.3% dip a year later. If we go back further in history, though, we can see that there have been some quite promising exceptions during the eighth month of the year. Back in

OpenAI failed to detect its AI agents multi-day hacking spree for a week

OpenAI did not realize for about a week that one of its own AI agents had broken into Hugging Face. By the time the company worked out where the attack came from, Hugging Face had already shut it down and called the FBI, according to Reuters. The program was built to work on its own. It could choose what to do, break a task into smaller steps, and carry out those steps with very little human help. Around July 9, it tried to get out of OpenAIs locked testing area. Two days later, on July 11, it entered Hugging Face and stayed there until July 13, co-founder Thomas Wolf said. The two companies did not speak about the incident until around July 20. OpenAI learned its agent was responsible after the breach had ended OpenAI told the public about the breach on July 21, a day after it reportedly first spoke with Hugging Face. The company said one of its AI agents had gone outside the limits set for it and entered another companys systems. The story quickly drew global attention, but the first announcement left out several key dates. It did not say that the agent had tried to escape on July 9, spent

Japans spot Bitcoin ETF could hit $18B in 2 years after debut: Report

According to Japan-based DeFi asset management platform xWin Finance, Bitcoin spot ETFs (exchange-traded funds) could top $18.4B. According to the firm, this was a bullish scenario based on Japans crypto adoption and market participation. It added, Japan‘s household financial assets total roughly $14.6 trillion. A $18.4 billion Bitcoin ETF market would represent only about 0.13% of that amount. It would also equal approximately 1% of Japan’s public equity investment fund market, which exceeds $1.8 trillion. The report noted that the demand for Japan spot BTC ETFs could be from three players. First, existing crypto investors, who are estimated to be about 5 million or 4% of the overall Japanese population. Second and third demand lines would come from new retail investors via securities accounts and allocation from institutional players (corporations and financial firms). In fact, this was the trend observed after U.S. Spot BTC ETFs went live in early 2024. Can Japan get a third of U.S Spot BTC ETF flows? For comparison, U.S spot BTC ETFs hit a cumulative flow of about $56B as of early 2026, two years after their debut. If Japans product hit the projected $18.4B flow by the second year, that would mean a third of U.S Spot BTC ETF demand. The

FBI used Google cookies, 500 food orders and a Monero seed phrase to identify Steam malware funder

A 15-page federal criminal complaint details how investigators combined a Bitcoin trail with Google cookies, phone records, and more than 500 Uber Eats deliveries to identify Zyaire Dontaevious Zamarion Wilkins as the alleged financier and marketer of a Steam malware campaign. A later search uncovered a Monero seed phrase tied to roughly $382,000 in cumulative transaction activity. Federal agents arrested Wilkins, 21, in Florida on July 14. The complaint, entered the following day, charges him with one count of conspiracy to obtain information by computer for private financial gain. The allegations concern the same eight-game campaign CryptoSlate reported on July 19. The FBI and the complaint allege that the campaign infected approximately 8,000 devices, accessed about 80 cryptocurrency wallets and stole at least $220,000. The complaint also lays out how investigators connected campaign funding to Wilkins and what they found after obtaining a residential search warrant. Messages describe Wilkins alleged financing role Prosecutors allege that another participant created the developer accounts and launched the games, while Wilkins supplied funding and helped market them. The games were promoted through Discord, Telegram, X and LinkedIn, while bots allegedly identified people with large crypto holdings for targeted messages. Messages cited in the complaint include discussions about spending $10,000 on a
