CLARITY Act odds fall to 34% as Senate delays vote

Prediction markets are lowering the chances of the CLARITY Act becoming law in 2026 as the Senate turns to Russia sanctions and federal nominations before its August recess. CLARITY Act loses its place on the Senate schedule Senate Majority Leader John Thune has not scheduled immediate action on the CLARITY Act, narrowing the path for the crypto market structure bill before lawmakers leave Washington. The Senate is instead moving forward with federal nominations and legislation imposing sanctions on Russia and Iran. Preliminary action on the crypto bill remains possible during the week of Aug. 3, but the chamber is scheduled to begin its summer recess after Aug. 7. According to Galaxy Digital head of research Alex Thorn, the timetable has become the main threat to passage. “The calendar is no longer merely an obstacle. It is now the enemy.” Thorn estimated that lawmakers needed to begin the floor process by July 30 to leave enough time for procedural votes and debate. The Senates decision to prioritize other legislation makes that timeline increasingly difficult. A vote after the recess is still possible. However, senators would return closer to the November midterm elections, when campaigning could displace complicated legislation requiring bipartisan negotiations. Senate vote math leaves little room for defections Most

Claude Mythos Cracked Post-Quantum Cryptography That Humans Spent Years Failing to Break

In briefAnthropic said its unreleased Claude Mythos Preview model found a previously unknown attack on HAWK, dropping the cost of stealing its smallest key from 2^64 operations to 2^38.The model also sped up an attack on a 7-round version of AES by 200 to 800 times, beating a record cryptographers set in 2013.Each result cost roughly $100,000 in API usage, and Anthropic staff spent several hundred hours verifying the AES work was real. Anthropic today said an unreleased version of its most powerful AI model found two previously unknown attacks on cryptographic algorithms, one of them against a scheme currently competing to become a U.S. federal standard. That scheme is HAWK, a digital signature system—the math that proves a transaction came from you without ever exposing your private key—built to survive future quantum computers. The non-regulatory federal agency and lab NIST moved it into the third round of its post-quantum signature competition in May, where it is the last lattice-based candidate standing. Claude found a symmetry buried in HAWKs math that no human had thought to use. For the smallest configuration, the cost of recovering a secret key fell from 2^64 operations to 2^38, roughly 67 million times less work. Fixing it means roughly

Teacher Arrested for Clapping at AI Data Center Public Hearing

In briefA Kansas teacher was arrested after clapping in protest over a proposed AI data center at a public hearing.Communities across the U.S. are increasingly pushing back against AI infrastructure over energy, water, and local impacts.Public opposition is becoming one of the biggest hurdles to the AI industrys rapid data center expansion. A Kansas high school physics teacher was arrested and carried out of a city commission meeting after expressing support for opponents of a proposed AI data center, according to a report by local broadcaster KWCH. Lux Claridge, a physics teacher at Emporia High School, was handcuffed after applauding several times in support of a speaker criticizing the proposed 1,000-acre Flint Hills Digital Campus. Emporia city commission reportedly warned attendees before the meeting that clapping, snapping, and other demonstrations would be considered disruptions. After a final warning, police removed Claridge from the chamber as the meeting continued. “Im glad to be out—but this is an inconvenience, really,” Claridge told KWCH after posting bail. “Its not really deterring me from speaking out or, I guess, clapping.” The Emporia Police Department said it remains committed to ensuring public meetings are conducted safely while respecting residents rights to participate in the civic process. Claridge plans to plead

Galaxy, MARA Holdings deepen Texas expansion with land acquisitions

Crypto companies continued to expand their physical footprint in Texas, with Galaxy Digital and MARA Holdings announcing separate land acquisitions tied to AI, high-performance computing (HPC) and Bitcoin mining infrastructure. On Tuesday, Galaxy Digital, a crypto financial services and infrastructure company, said it acquired a 500-acre site in McGregor, Texas, where it plans to build its second AI and high-performance computing (HPC) data center campus in the state. The project is expected to launch with 74 megawatts of power capacity before expanding in later phases. MARA Holdings, a Bitcoin miner and digital infrastructure company, separately announced an agreement to acquire a 1,200-acre powered site in Matagorda County with access to up to 2 gigawatts of power capacity. The company said it intends to develop the site for AI and HPC workloads as well as bitcoin mining. The announcements came the same day that Meta Platforms disclosed plans for a $14 billion AI data center campus in El Paso, adding to a wave of large-scale infrastructure investments in Texas. Texas has emerged as a key destination for data center and crypto infrastructure projects because of its large power market, relatively low electricity costs and the availability of land suitable for large-scale developments. AI firms are shredding physical books because copyright law is quietly rewarding them

ISBNdb is marketing physical-book orders of up to one million titles to AI developers, including material it describes as non-digitized, rare, or out of print. The offer, reported by 404 Media, puts a 2025 copyright ruling in an uncomfortable new light: discarding a purchased book can support the legal premise that its internal scan replaced the original while keeping the librarys copy count unchanged. ISBNdbs current service and Anthropics historical scanning program follow separate source chains. Physical disposal is the shared incentive created when books become scalable training data. The one-copy incentive In February 2024, Anthropic hired Tom Turvey, the former head of partnerships for Googles book-scanning project, to develop a lawful route to a much larger research library. The company later spent many millions of dollars buying millions of print books. Service providers removed the bindings, cut the pages to size, scanned them, and discarded the paper originals, according to the federal court record. The Washington Post later reported on the project using material that had become public. The operation predates ISBNdbs current marketing and stands on its own documented procurement chain. The June 23, 2025 order reached two distinct fair-use conclusions. It held that Anthropics use of copies to train specific large language models was

XRP Price Slides as Senate Drops Clarity Act and Fed Decision Looms

In briefXRP is trading at $1.06, off nearly 8% over the past week. The movement happens as the U.S. Senate shelved the Clarity Act before its August recess and global markets braced for the Feds July 29 rate decision.XRPs technicals are almost uniformly bearish: a confirmed death cross, RSI at 40.9, negative Squeeze momentum, and a composite score of -63%—the only technical lifeline is that it is deeply oversold. The global macro backdrop is as unfavorable as its been all year for crypto markets. New Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh, in only his second FOMC meeting, is widely expected to hold rates at 3.50%–3.75%, but CME FedWatch put hike odds near 38% as recently as last weekend—the highest of this cycle. Even a hawkish hold can rattle risk assets. Bitcoin is parked near $63,400–$64,000, well below its June highs around $80,000, and altcoins are taking the brunt. XRP, the cryptocurrency developed by the founders of payments company Ripple, had a moment of optimism this month that now feels like a distant memory. As Decrypt reported on July 21, the coin cautiously jumped 3.25% to $1.1485 when reports broke that President Donald Trump had agreed to the Clarity Acts long-stalled ethics provision, briefly nudging Senate

Zcash Activates Ironwood Upgrade After Counterfeiting Scare

In briefZcash has activated the Ironwood network upgrade, replacing the Orchard shielded pool with a new private pool. The upgrade prevents any potentially counterfeit coins from leaving the retired pool while preserving transaction privacy.Ironwood also introduces quantum-resistant transaction records and formally verified cryptography designed to reduce future security risks. Weeks after a critical vulnerability sparked a market rout and raised questions about Zcashs supply, the privacy-focused cryptocurrency has activated Ironwood, an upgrade designed to ensure any counterfeit coins can never enter circulation. The Ironwood upgrade retires the Orchard shielded pool, which holds roughly 3.7 million ZEC worth about $1.7 billion, and begins migrating users into a new shielded pool. The upgrade also introduces new accounting rules for Zcashs circulating supply while preserving the networks privacy guarantees. The road to Ironwood began in May, when security researcher Taylor Hornby, using Claude Opus 4.8, discovered a four-year-old flaw in Orchard that could have allowed an attacker to create counterfeit ZEC. Developers issued an emergency patch in June, but because shielded transactions intentionally hide their details, there was no way to prove whether the vulnerability had ever been exploited. The uncertainty sparked a sharp selloff, with Zcash falling 38% as investors questioned whether the cryptocurrencys supply could be

Ethereum L2 ecosystem loses momentum as TVL drops to two-year low

Quick TakeOptimistic rollups like Optimism, Base, and Arbitrum have continued to dominate most in terms of TVL.The following is an excerpt from The Blocks Data and Insights newsletter. Total value locked in Ethereum Layer 2 networks has slid back to roughly $5 billion, a level last seen in 2023. This undoes most of the buildup from 2024, when mindshare was focused on the successful launches of L2s like Optimism, Arbitrum, and ZKsync. Optimistic rollups such as Optimism, Base, and Arbitrum continue to dominate TVL, accounting for $4.8 billion, or 96% of the total. The retreat in TVL has lined up with a rough stretch for Ethereum, too. The Ethereum Foundation has lost several senior leaders since the start of the year, including co-executive directors and broader foundation layoffs. Meanwhile, traditional finance, which was expected to validate Ethereums institutional thesis, has increasingly embraced alternatives alongside Ethereum. Examples include DTCC, which is tokenizing Treasuries against a $100 trillion custody base and JPMorgan, which has brought JPM Coin onchain across multiple public blockchains. Stablecoins remain the exception. USDC and USDT still settle predominantly on Ethereum and its L2s. This stablecoin base has kept Ethereum central to cryptos TradFi bridge so far, but its a fine line to hang

Apples App Store promoted fake Bitcoin wallet that stole $1.8M after developer spent a year warning them

Apple‘s tightly controlled App Store is facing renewed scrutiny after three Bitcoin holders alleged they lost $1.8 million to a fake crypto wallet, adding to a growing list of malicious wallet apps that have reached users despite the company’s screening process. The lawsuit, filed July 24 in California, accuses Apple of failing to adequately review and remove applications impersonating Sparrow Wallet while promoting the App Store as a safe and trusted source for software. The case follows warnings dating back more than two years about fake Sparrow apps and comes months after researchers identified 26 applications impersonating major crypto brands across Apples ecosystem. Together, the incidents are putting pressure on one of Apples longstanding arguments for maintaining tight control over software distribution: that screening applications before they reach users provides greater protection against fraud and malicious software. Sparrow developer warned Apple more than a year before losses Apples exposure in the case rests less on the initial appearance of a fraudulent app than on what the company allegedly knew before later victims were hit. Sparrow founder Craig Raw had been flagging unauthorized mobile versions of his wallet since early 2024. Sparrow is a desktop-only product, so an iPhone app bearing its name should not have required

Morgan Stanley debuts ether, solana exchange-traded products after bitcoin fund success

“Digital assets are becoming an increasingly important component of diversified investment portfolios,” Amy Oldenburg, head of digital asset strategy at Morgan Stanley, said in a press release. “As client interest in digital assets continues to grow, were focused on providing a range of digital asset solutions that allow investors to diversify their portfolios across traditional and decentralized asset classes while also adhering to Morgan Stanleys standards for governance, infrastructure and risk management.” Both products charge a 0.14% expense ratio — the lowest on the market — and plan to stake a portion of their ether or SOL holdings, with any staking rewards passed through to investors rather than kept by Morgan Stanley. The products build on the Morgan Stanley Bitcoin Trust (MSBT), which debuted earlier this year and had gathered more than $381 million in assets under management through July 16. The bitcoin fund tracks the CoinDesk Bitcoin Benchmark Rate. BlackRock, which owns the largest spot bitcoin ETF on the market, recently brought its first crypto income ETF to the market, as clients are increasingly looking for steady income from their long-term bitcoin investments. Morgan Stanley also enters the market with a built-in distribution advantage. Its wealth management business includes roughly 16,000 financial advisors
