Can Bitcoin's price finally reverse the curse of September in 2026?

With just 3 days to go before September starts, there is a different kind of fear in the crypto market. Though August saw Bitcoins rally breaking its long-standing resistance level, the coming month is already igniting FUD (fear, uncertainty, and doubt).

Will September 2026 be different for Bitcoin?

According to CryptoQuant, September could be a difficult month for both U.S stocks and Bitcoin [BTC] in 2026. However, investors should not assume that Bitcoin will automatically fall just because it is September.

This, because it is not necessary that historical seasonality mean September will be bearish every year.

For context, Bitcoins September weakness was particularly notable from 2017 through 2022, when BTC posted six consecutive negative September returns. However, the pattern weakened considerably afterwards, with positive September closes in 2023, 2024, and 2025.

In fact, with strong spot and ETF demand, there is hope that the September effect could once again fail to materialize in 2026. Just like Bitcoin, there is a historical tendency of U.S stocks to underperform in September.

In fact, over the last 50 years, the S&P 500 has averaged around -0.8% in September.

Are metrics in favor?

At the same time, the Coinbase Premium Index recovering to 0.00 after remaining negative for 14 consecutive days could be a sign of hope.

However, zero is not the same as a strong positive premium. It essentially means the Coinbase buying advantage has disappeared, meaning that the market has reached a neutral point rather than entering a zone of clearly bullish demand.

That‘s not all either as Bitcoin’s SOPR highlighted a notable improvement in investor profitability. For most of the month, the SOPR remained below 1, generally around 0.98–0.99.

However, towards the second half of August, the SOPR began moving higher and eventually broke above 1, with a sharp rise to around 1.01 near the end of the month. This means that by the end of August, holders have been increasingly willing to sell while still making gains.

Additionally, Bitcoins Mean Coin Age continued its strong uptrend in August 2026, rising from roughly 1.69K to above 1.70K. This, despite a brief dip towards the beginning of the month.

This is an important finding because it suggested that a growing portion of Bitcoins supply was unmoved, rather than being actively sold or traded.

AMBCrypto recently presented an analysis which stated that Bitcoin has defied its historically weak August trend. It did so by gaining by around 25.6% this month and pushing back toward the $80,000-level.

Therefore, with FOMO building and previously bearish on-chain indicators turning bullish, Bitcoin could be positioned for further upside into September.

Final Summary

  • Bitcoins September weakness was particularly notable from 2017 through 2022.
  • With strong spot and ETF demand, there is hope that the September effect could fail to materialize in 2026.
