Micron Is S&P 500s Top 5-Year Tech Winner After 1,313% Rally

Micron Technology has delivered one of the most extraordinary five-year runs in the S&P 500, and even Nvidia has failed to keep pace.

MU closed Friday at $1,016.59, leaving the stock up roughly 1,313% over five years, according to StatMuse. Nvidia returned about 912% over the same period.

Microns transformation is equally dramatic in dollar terms.

Its market capitalization has climbed from roughly $104.2 billion at the end of 2021 to about $1.15 trillion today, an increase of more than $1 trillion.

Micron leads AI peers over five years.Microns Five-Year Ranking Needs One Important Caveat

StockMKTNewz post calls Micron the best-performing S&P 500 stock over five years.

Using todays constituent list, that is not quite the case.

Sandisk currently ranks first and Comfort Systems USA second, but neither was an S&P 500 member throughout the period. Sandisk only became independent in February 2025 before entering the index in November, while Comfort Systems joined in December.

Microns run is therefore more comparable with established constituents such as Nvidia.

The scale of that rally was already evident when Micron crossed $1 trillion earlier this year.

The company has also moved far beyond its reputation as a cyclical PC-memory supplier.

AI Has Changed the Economics of Memory

High-bandwidth memory, or HBM, has become essential for AI accelerators because advanced GPUs need enormous amounts of rapidly accessible data.

Demand is now running at more than twice available HBM supply, according to recent industry analysis, while Micron plans to double HBM wafer output to roughly 100,000 per month by year-end.

That shortage has created unusually strong pricing power.

Micron generated record fiscal Q3 revenue of $41.46 billion, compared with $9.3 billion a year earlier. Oue coverage of AI memory demand also shows why Wall Street increasingly views memory as structural AI infrastructure rather than another short-lived semiconductor cycle.

Five-year stock return~1,313%
Nvidia five-year return~912%
MU price$1,016.59
Market cap~$1.15T
2021 market cap~$104B
2026 YTD return~256%

The next test comes Sept. 30.

Wall Street expects Micron to report about $50.4 billion in quarterly revenue and $30.89 in adjusted earnings per share, compared with $11.32 billion and $2.84 a year earlier.

That earnings explosion helps explain why MU still trades near only six times forward earnings despite its spectacular run.

The risk is that memory remains cyclical. New capacity from Micron, Samsung and SK Hynix could eventually create oversupply, while weaker AI spending would hit pricing quickly. Coinpaper recently highlighted that tension when MU fell sharply amid concerns about AI returns.

For now, however, the five-year scoreboard captures how dramatically the hierarchy of semiconductor winners has changed.

Nvidia may be the face of the AI boom, but Micron has quietly delivered the bigger five-year stock return.
