Metaplanet moves 3,881 BTC as paper loss nears $1.4B

एब्स्ट्रैक्ट:On Aug. 12, onchain analyst Lookonchain reported that Metaplanet transferred 3,881 Bitcoin, worth about $247.3 million, from tracked wallets while Bitcoin traded near $63,600. The company has not confirmed a sale, and its last disclosed treasury balance remains 43,000 BTC, making the transfer roughly 9% of that holding. Lookonchain estimates Metaplanets average acquisition cost at $96,191, implying an unrealized loss of about $1.4 billion; this is mark-to-market, not a realized loss. Separately, Hut 8 moved 493 BTC. Analysts note that wallet movements alone do not prove a change in ownership—coins may be relocated between custodians, cold storage, or financing arrangements. Without a company disclosure or evidence of exchange deposits, treating the transfer as a sale would exceed available evidence.

Metaplanet moved 3,881 Bitcoin worth about $247.3 million from wallets tracked by onchain analysts on Aug. 12, drawing attention to the Japanese companys large corporate treasury as Bitcoin traded near $63,600.

Summary

  • Lookonchain tracked 3,881 BTC leaving Metaplanet linked wallets, worth roughly $247 million during Wednesday transfers.
  • Metaplanet officially reported 43,000 BTC holdings in July and has not announced any Bitcoin sale.
  • The transferred amount equals about 9% of Metaplanets last officially disclosed 43,000 BTC treasury balance.
  • Bitcoin traded near $63,600, leaving Metaplanets reported acquisition costs deeply underwater on a mark-to-market basis.
  • Hut 8 separately transferred 493 BTC worth about $31 million during the same trading window.

Lookonchain first reported a 1,473 BTC transfer worth about $93.8 million, then said total outflows over roughly three hours had reached 3,881 BTC in a later post.

Metaplanet was not the only corporate Bitcoin holder moving funds. Lookonchain also reported that Hut 8 transferred 493 BTC worth about $31.36 million roughly three hours earlier. The analyst did not identify the purpose of Hut 8s transfer, and the company had not announced a related Bitcoin sale.

Neither transfer establishes that Bitcoin was sold. Metaplanet had not published a disclosure announcing a sale or explaining its wallet movements when checked Wednesday, while Hut 8 had not publicly linked its 493 BTC transfer to a disposal. Its official filings still showed an Aug. 10 shareholder meeting notice as the latest disclosure.

Metaplanet has not confirmed a Bitcoin sale

Metaplanet last disclosed 43,000 BTC in its treasury after buying 2,823 BTC during the second quarter. The latest transfers equal about 9% of that reported balance. As previously reported, the company raised its Bitcoin holdings to 43,000 BTC while its Bitcoin income business recorded lower quarterly revenue.

A wallet movement alone does not show that beneficial ownership changed. Companies can move Bitcoin between custodians, cold wallets, trading accounts or collateral arrangements. Metaplanet has previously used Bitcoin backed financing, making the destination and subsequent movement of the coins important before describing the transfer as a disposal.

Lookonchain said Metaplanet had acquired its 43,000 BTC at an estimated average price of $96,191 and was “currently sitting on a loss of $1.4B.” The figure is the analyst‘s dollar based estimate, not a new loss amount disclosed by the company. Metaplanet’s July figures reported its average acquisition cost in Japanese yen.

Bitcoin weakness leaves Metaplanet treasury underwater

Bitcoin traded around $63,612 at the time of writing, down about 0.4% from the previous close. At that price, a $96,191 average acquisition estimate would place the 43,000 BTC position roughly $1.4 billion below its estimated cost basis. The calculation is mark to market and does not represent a realized loss unless coins are sold.

Metaplanet has already reported large accounting swings from Bitcoin. As previously reported, the company posted a $725 million first quarter loss driven by a Bitcoin markdown, while management has continued to frame Bitcoin as a long term treasury asset.

The company is also building businesses around those holdings. It is studying Bitcoin backed credit products with JPYC and has expanded into securities through its acquisition of Siiibo Securities. Those plans create possible treasury uses for Bitcoin beyond an outright sale, although Metaplanet has not linked Wednesdays transfers to any financing product.

Earlier wallet moves show why destination matters

Large Metaplanet transfers have prompted similar speculation before. In March, onchain trackers reported that the company moved 4,986 BTC worth roughly $368 million after three months of wallet inactivity. The coins were reported as moving to new wallets rather than providing evidence of a sale.

That precedent makes the destination of the latest 3,881 BTC important. A transfer to another company controlled address or custodian would leave economic ownership unchanged. A confirmed exchange deposit could raise the possibility of selling, but even an exchange transfer would not by itself prove that a trade occurred.

What happens next for Metaplanet

The next verified update will likely come from Metaplanet, a regulatory disclosure or further onchain tracing that identifies the receiving addresses. Investors will be watching whether the company changes its officially reported 43,000 BTC balance and whether the transferred coins move into addresses attributed to exchanges. Metaplanets disclosure page contained no Aug. 12 Bitcoin sale notice when checked.

Until then, the clearest verified development is that 3,881 BTC left wallets attributed to Metaplanet while Bitcoin remained far below Lookonchains estimated acquisition price. There is no company confirmation that the $247 million movement represents a sale, so treating the full transfer as a disposal would go beyond the available evidence.
