XRP derivatives exposure is returning after a sharp late-August contraction, but aggressive selling continues across perpetual and spot markets. A new analysis suggests bearish taker-side positioning remains active even as the tokens price shows resilience.

Key Takeaways

  • XRPs seven-day open-interest change recovered sharply in eight days.
  • Binance open interest sat around $244 million on Sept. 6.
  • Aggressive sellers dominated perpetual and spot trading.

XRP Open Interest Rebounds From Late-August Contraction

XRPs seven-day open-interest change moved from negative 27% on Aug. 29 to positive 1% on Sept. 6, according to an analysis published by Cryptoquant on Sept. 7. Contributor Amr Taha framed the 28-percentage-point swing as a shift from the late-August deleveraging phase.

Binance open interest in XRP sat around $244 million, while perpetual cumulative volume delta (CVD), the running difference between market buy and market sell volume, fell to approximately negative $897.1 million. A declining CVD indicates that taker-initiated sell orders have exceeded aggressive buying during the measured period. XRP nevertheless traded around $1.42.

The analysis explicitly qualified its interpretation of the relationship between returning exposure and continued sell-side activity. While acknowledging that “data cannot identify the motivation behind every newly opened position,” the analyst wrote:

“The combination of higher open interest and persistently negative perpetual CVD suggests bearish taker-side positioning remains active and that traders continue to add exposure consistent with expectations of lower prices.”

Rising open interest alone cannot determine whether newly added derivatives exposure reflects bullish or bearish positioning among traders. CME Group, a major operator of regulated futures and options markets, defines open interest as the total number of futures contracts that remain outstanding.

Perpetual futures allow traders to maintain long or short positions without a fixed expiration date. Through crypto derivatives, market participants can express expectations of rising or falling prices, often using leverage that magnifies gains, losses, and liquidation risk.

The latest pattern contrasts with XRP derivatives conditions recorded in January, when open interest rose above its 30-day average while leverage remained moderate. That earlier configuration was characterized as cautious accumulation, while the Sept. 6 readings combined returning exposure with sustained taker-driven selling.

Spot Selling Adds to the Bearish Positioning Signal

Selling pressure extended beyond perpetual futures as estimated spot CVD across centralized exchanges fell to approximately negative $1.4 billion. The reading was the lowest shown during the chart‘s observed period, indicating that market sell orders also dominated aggregated spot activity while XRP’s price remained comparatively stable.

The broader derivatives environment also showed traders expanding leveraged exposure across smaller cryptocurrencies. Altcoin perpetual open interest surpassed bitcoins on Sept. 6 for the first time since December 2024, highlighting elevated participation beyond the XRP market. Open interest measures participation, however, rather than establishing directional conviction by itself.

XRPs relative stability followed a rebound from its mid-August low near $1, even after the token fell approximately 27% during the first eight months of 2026. The price recovery created a divergence between the market value of XRP and the continued dominance of aggressive sellers in the derivatives and spot data.

The analyst summarized the conflicting signals by focusing on the split between expanding exposure and persistent aggressive selling:

“For now, XRP is showing an unusual structure: fresh derivatives exposure is returning, but the aggressive side of that positioning continues to favor sellers even as price remains relatively resilient.”
