Japans Regulators Weigh Custody Standards for Crypto Japan is moving closer to permitting a spot bitcoin exchange-traded fund, a step that could open the countrys digital asset market to a broader group of institutional and retail investors. The July 15 approval by Japans National Diet, moving bitcoin and roughly 105 other crypto assets out of the Payment Services Act and into the Financial Instruments and Exchange Act removed a central legal obstacle to listing a bitcoin fund on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. A launch in 2028 is possible, but far from assured. Legal amendments, individual fund reviews and implementation of new crypto taxation rules could all delay trading beyond that date. SBI Holdings and Nomura are among the large Japanese financial groups reportedly preparing digital asset products ahead of any rule change. African Nations Eye State Bitcoin Mining as Kazakhstan Sets New Model

Several African countries are exploring state-backed Bitcoin mining as a way to monetize surplus energy and build strategic digital asset reserves.Kazakhstan has introduced a framework requiring industrial miners to contribute part of their Bitcoin production to a planned national crypto reserve. The shift reflects a broader trend of governments treating Bitcoin mining as an energy and reserve management strategy rather than a purely private industry. African governments are increasingly evaluating state-backed Bitcoin mining as a tool to monetize underutilized energy resources, following a broader global trend that now includes Kazakhstans newly approved framework linking industrial mining directly to a sovereign cryptocurrency reserve. Africas Energy Advantage Draws Attention Several African countries possess abundant hydroelectric, geothermal and natural gas resources that remain partially underutilized because of limited transmission infrastructure or weak domestic demand. Rather than leaving excess generation idle, policymakers are increasingly considering Bitcoin mining as a way to convert stranded electricity into digital assets. The approach has gained momentum as governments search for new sources of revenue, diversify national reserves and attract infrastructure investment without relying exclusively on commodity exports. While policy frameworks differ across the continent, the common objective is to transform surplus energy into productive economic assets. Bitcoin slips below $65K as Trump unveils new global tariffs

Bitcoin has fallen below $65,000 after the Trump administration announced tariffs of 10% to 12.5% on imports from 60 trading partners covering more than 99% of U.S. trade. CNBC reported that the duties will take effect at 12:01 a.m. ET on Friday, replacing the temporary 10% global tariff scheduled to expire the same day. The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative has linked the measures to what it described as inadequate enforcement against goods made with forced labor. Bitcoin traded as low as $64,985 on Thursday, July 23, before briefly recovering above $65,000. crypto.news data showed the asset down about 1.5% over 24 hours, with its market capitalization standing near $1.3 trillion. Selling resumed after details of the tariff plan emerged, leaving the rebound above $65,000 short-lived. Short-interval charts showed consecutive bearish candles during the decline, while CoinGlass recorded rising liquidations of leveraged long positions as traders faced another risk-off development. The tariff announcement arrived during a difficult session for risk assets. The Nasdaq Composite fell about 2.2% to a four-week low, while the S&P 500 lost 1.2% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped about 507 points. Escalating tensions between the United States and Iran had already pressured Bitcoin earlier in the day. Al

Goldman Sachs CEO backs Clarity Act despite banking industry's concerns over stablecoin rules

Solomons endorsement contrasts with growing opposition from other major banking executives, including JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, who have argued that the legislation could put traditional banks at a competitive disadvantage by allowing crypto companies to offer yield-bearing stablecoin products that resemble bank deposits without being subject to the same regulatory framework. Speaking to Fox Business in May, Dimon said he was dissatisfied with the latest version of the bill because “it allows them to effectively pay interest on deposits, stablecoins or something like that, without protection that they should have.” “The banks will not accept it that way,” Dimon said. “Im not worried about stablecoins but if it happened Im telling you I will have nothing to do with it and it will eventually blow up.” JPMorgan has also warned that crypto legislation should close regulatory gaps rather than create new ones. In a blog post published in June, executives at the bank argued that firms offering products that function like traditional bank accounts should face comparable oversight and consumer protections. The debate over stablecoin rewards has become one of the biggest sticking points in negotiations over the CLARITY Act. Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has argued that banks are lobbying lawmakers to restrict

Cointelegraph reached out to BitMEX for comment but did not receive a response before publication. BitMEX users seek Bitcoin return under fraud claims According to the filing, BitMEX allowed customers to use leverage of up to 100 times their collateral, then automatically liquidated positions while collateral was still allegedly worth twice the losses incurred.
