Russia arrests more than 20 after raids on unregistered crypto exchange services

Russia has detained over 20 workers in raids on nine crypto exchanges over alleged laundering scheme tied to scam proceeds. According to an official statement from Russia‘s Federal Security Service (FSB), authorities, working with the Interior Ministry, shut down nine unregistered cryptocurrency exchange services operating from Moscow’s business district after alleging they were used to convert money stolen through phone scams into cryptocurrency and send it to accounts controlled by Ukrainian coordinators. The operation took place at the Moscow International Business Center, commonly known as Moscow City, where more than 20 employees of the exchange services were detained. The FSB alleged the exchanges formed part of nine overseas-coordinated channels used to move funds out of Russia through crypto transactions. Authorities said the case centers on proceeds from remote fraud targeting Russian citizens. According to the FSB, victims remained in continuous contact with scam call centers, followed detailed instructions from fraudsters and did not realize the nature of the transactions they were carrying out. Crypto exchange workers and couriers face fraud charges Investigators allege the exchange services sold cryptocurrency to victims, including pensioners who were acting under the influence of scammers, before transferring the digital assets to accounts belonging to what the FSB described as Ukrainian

Bitcoin tops $65,000 after 'massive surprise' US jobs miss

Quick TakeBitcoin regained its footing above $65,000 on Friday as U.S. employers unexpectedly cut 23,000 jobs in July against forecasts for an 80,000 gain and fears of a September rate hike subsided. The unemployment rate slipped to 4.1% from 4.2%, but the drop came from a falling labor force participation rate, not stronger hiring. Bitcoin rose above $65,000 on Friday after U.S. payrolls unexpectedly fell in July, a print that analysts say sent traders scrambling to price out a September Federal Reserve rate hike. The worlds foremost cryptocurrency traded up nearly 2% on the day, according to The Blocks price page, which tracked bitcoin (BTC) at around $65,200 on Aug. 7. Nonfarm payrolls dropped by 23,000 in July against forecasts for an 80,000 gain, while the Bureau of Labor Statistics revised Junes figure down to a 20,000 increase from 57,000. The unemployment rate slipped to 4.1% from 4.2%. “This is a massive surprise and could see the markets completely price out a hike in September,” said Kyle Rodda, senior financial market analyst at Capital.com. The dollar fell, and precious metals rose, he said, with futures moving as though weak data was good news for risk assets given the policy implications. Rodda flagged the decline in the

U.S. unexpectedly shed 23,000 jobs in July, putting Fed rate hikes in question

SummaryThe U.S. lost 23,000 jobs in July, while Junes originally reported 57,000 job gain was revised down to just 20,000.Forecasts had been for 80,000 jobs to have been added in July.Crypto markets are showing little reaction even as stock and bond markets gain on the news. The U.S. labor market showed weakness for the second consecutive month in July, possibly giving the Federal Reserve room to hold rates in place despite high inflation. According to the government‘s Nonfarm Payrolls Report released Friday morning, the U.S. lost 23,000 jobs last month. That was far below the consensus expectation of a gain of 80,000 jobs, and down from June’s addition of 20,000 (revised down from an originally reported 57,000). Mays job gains were also revised sizably lower — down to 63,000 from an originally reported 129,000. The last negative jobs print was in February, when the U.S. lost 156,000 jobs. The unemployment rate dipped to 4.1%, compared with the expected 4.2% and Junes 4.2%. Market reaction is swift, with U.S. stock index futures gaining and interest rates dipping. Also moving higher are precious metals, with gold now up 3% for the day and silver up just shy of 6%. Theres little action in crypto, with bitcoin remaining modestly

Why Bitcoin's BIP-110 refuses to die despite near-zero miner support

SummaryPublic miner support signalling for BIP-110 remains far below the level most observers associate with a successful Bitcoin upgrade ahead of the likely activation point on Aug. 9.Supporters say that misses the point: BIP-110 is a user-activated soft fork, not a miner vote. The episode reveals that Bitcoins governance is ultimately driven by economic coordination, not outright consensus. Bitcoin is approaching a rare test this weekend, with a small group of nodes is preparing to reject blocks produced by almost all of the networks miners. The Bitcoin Improvement Proposal (BIP)-110, a controversial proposal to temporarily restrict how much non-payment data can be stored on the Bitcoin blockchain, approaches its long-planned mandatory signalling period, expected to be sometime on Aug. 9. The actual activation, if it takes place, would follow at block 965,664, estimated around four weeks later. Its ordinary 55% approval threshold is already out of reach. Nodes are computers running Bitcoin software that independently check transactions and blocks against the networks rules, rejecting anything they consider invalid. Miners create new blocks, while nodes decide whether to accept them. On paper, BIP-110 looks finished, with public signaling from mining pools negligible at under 3% and only two days to go until the Bitcoin network reaches the

Tokenized Asset Deposits Tripled to $7.4B as DeFi Shrank: CoinShares

In briefDeposits of tokenized real-world assets into DeFi lending venues and exchanges more than tripled to $7.4 billion over the year to Q2, CoinShares and Token Terminal said.Total DeFi deposits fell by approximately 15% across the same period, while RWA spot trading volumes rose roughly 220%.Almost 70% of that collateral sits on lending venues built on Ethereum, with Plasma and Solana behind it. Deposits of tokenized real-world assets into decentralized lending platforms and exchanges more than tripled over the past year, climbing from $2.3 billion to $7.4 billion, while total deposits across DeFi fell by approximately 15%. The figures come from The Growth of Hybrid Finance, published Thursday by asset manager CoinShares and on-chain data provider Token Terminal. It is the pairs second joint report, covering the second quarter of 2025 through the second quarter of 2026, with all data supplied by Token Terminal. Over the past 365 days, real-world assets (RWAs) have moved beyond tokenisation into increasingly active onchain markets. The same divergence runs through three markets. Aggregate spot volumes on decentralized exchanges declined by around 70% over the period, while volumes in tokenized real-world assets rose by roughly 220%. On perpetual futures venues, both trading volumes and open interest in RWAs kept

CEX perpetual futures volume falls to $4T, lowest since late 2023

Crypto perpetual futures trading volume on centralized cryptocurrency exchanges (CEXs) fell to $4 trillion in July, marking a 31-month low last seen in December 2023. Binance led CEXs with $1.4 trillion in monthly perpetual futures volume, followed by OKX with $607 billion and Bybit with $300 billion, analytics platform CryptoRank said in a Friday X post. Perpetual futures volumes briefly recovered between April and June before declining across all major venues in July. The 31-month low in perpetual futures activity came as daily spot crypto trading volume fell 23.6% between July 1 and July 31, from $17.8 billion to $13.6 billion, according to analytics provider Coinglass.Source: CryptoRank Perps volume on DEXs nears one-year low Perpetual trading volume on decentralized exchanges (DEXs) fell to $531 billion in July, the lowest level since June 2025 and a 21% decline from the $676 billion seen in June 2026, according to data aggregator DefiLlama.Perpetuals trading volume on decentralized exchanges. Bitcoiners turn to dice throws as self-custody setups are re-evaluated

In light of the catastrophic low-entropy bug in Coldcard hardware wallets, linked to publicly observed thefts beginning on July 30, Bitcoin holders have started to re-evaluate the trust assumptions in their hardware wallet setups. How Coldcards entropy flaw worked The Coldcard devices were equipped with apparently functional STM32 “true random number generators” (TRNGs) that rely on physical processes to produce an unguessable seed phrase. However, after Coldcard creator NVK decided to initiate a firmware rewrite to switch from a GPL-licensed free software model to a read-only model, a serious vulnerability appears to have been introduced. Starting with firmware version 4.0.1, released in March 2021, the device used MicroPythons Yasmarang PRNG instead of properly using the STM32 hardware RNG. Random number generation is an unsolvable problem in computer science, which is why the generation of secure, unguessable private keys always has to rely on external physical processes to a degree. The use of the Yasmarang PRNG was widely characterized by analysts in the space as a pre-programmed fallback. However, Coinkite has now disputed this characterization in a recent X post: The conjecture that Coldcards were programmed to default to an obviously insecure method of seed generation has also sparked speculation on X about whether this was a deliberately

Bitcoin developer says self-custody fears cost him gains

German Bitcoin developer René Pickhardt said on Aug. 6 that fears about self-custody security and key management kept him from accumulating more Bitcoin, despite believing the asset had upside. In a post, Pickhardt wrote that “security they describe the operational burden individual holders accept. Blockstream CEO Adam Back responded that “with great bearer cash power comes great responsibility to not lose your keys.” The response captures the trade-off: Bitcoin allows holders to control assets without a bank, but no central institution can reset a lost private key or reverse an unauthorized valid transaction. Coldcard losses sharpen the self-custody debate Recent wallet security incidents give that debate context. Cinco Días, citing Galaxy Research, reported that roughly 1,755 BTC had been stolen from about 5,000 wallets across several waves. Earlier Galaxy estimates were lower, and Coinkite has said the full attribution and scope remain unresolved, so the figure should be treated as an evolving on-chain estimate rather than a final confirmed loss. The failure also does not show that every hardware wallet faces the same flaw. Block said its products were unaffected, while other manufacturers have separately explained their entropy-generation designs. The vulnerability followed affected seed phrases even if users imported them into another wallet, meaning changing

Bitcoin Telegram accounts targeted by North Korean hackers

Bitcoiners are facing a renewed warning over an active social-engineering campaign that hijacks trusted Telegram accounts and funnels cryptocurrency professionals into fake Zoom or Microsoft Teams meetings. Lightning News raised the alarm on Aug. 7, citing recent accounts from Bitcoin community members. Independent security research confirms the core attack chain, though not every claim has been verified. JUMPSEC said in July that it obtained source code from an active BlueNoroff phishing kit after exposed JavaScript source maps. The researchers found a victim-acquisition platform that abuses compromised Telegram contacts, profiles cryptocurrency wallets and delivers malware to selected targets on Windows and macOS systems. JUMPSEC said identified campaign infrastructure remained active as of July 22. Telegram accounts under attack, source: XBlueNoroff turns trusted Telegram contacts into lures The attack begins with trust rather than a blockchain vulnerability. JUMPSEC found operators using compromised Telegram accounts belonging to real industry contacts to invite targets to fake video meetings. Because messages arrive from genuine accounts and can reference existing relationships, sender recognition alone provides limited protection. Google Mandiant independently documented a similar UNC1069 intrusion in February. A victim received messages from a compromised crypto executives Telegram account, scheduled a meeting and was redirected to a spoofed Zoom domain. The victim

Coldcard temporarily halts customer data deletion over July exploit

Coldcard has temporarily suspended its automatic customer data deletion process because of legal obligations tied to the security incident disclosed on July 30, preserving records that would otherwise have been erased after 120 days. SummaryColdcard has suspended its automatic customer data deletion policy because of legal obligations tied to its July security incident.Customers can still request their records be handled under the companys original data retention policy by contacting support. The policy change follows a wallet flaw that Galaxy Research linked to 1,596 confirmed stolen Bitcoin across three attack waves.Coldcard said retained customer records will remain restricted to authorized personnel and used only to meet legal requirements. Coldcard announced the policy change in a post on X, saying it must retain customer records that could be relevant to ongoing and anticipated legal proceedings arising from the wallet security incident. Update on Customer Data Retention We want to inform our customers of a change to our data-handling practices in connection with the security incident disclosed on July 30, 2026.
