Crypto Laundromat Smashed: FBI and Australian Police Crush Global Cyber Syndicate

Özet:FBI and Australian Police crush a global cyber syndicate laundering millions in crypto via open-source hacks.

The U.S. Embassy in Australia and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) have publicly announced the completion of a joint operation with the Australian Federal Police that dismantled an international crypto laundering operation serving a global cybercrime syndicate.

Washington is positioning the case as a demonstration of law enforcement agencies' ability to deanonymize and seize cryptocurrency and other assets anywhere in the world.

Two local residents have been taken into custody in Perth, Western Australia: 21-year-old Reuben Ian Thomson and 23-year-old Louis Michael Gebler. According to investigators, the suspects organized a global cyber operation through a supply-chain attack:

  • Source code modification: The suspects allegedly embedded malware into legitimate and popular open-source software development tools.
  • Network compromise: The vulnerable software allowed the hackers to gain covert access to the infrastructure of more than 1,000 organizations worldwide, leading to the theft of 300 gigabytes of corporate data and 500,000 user credentials.
  • Cryptocurrency laundering: Access to the compromised networks was sold for cryptocurrency on underground darknet forums. Decentralized mixers and distributed chains of wallets were used to launder the proceeds. During the searches, authorities seized large amounts of crypto assets and premium property purchased with them.

An Australian court has already formally charged Thomson with intentionally dealing with proceeds of crime exceeding $100,000.

Political trail

At the same time, the American side is using this case to send a stern warning to the entire digital asset sector. FBI Deputy Legal Attaché Daud Andish stressed that “hiding behind a computer screen is no longer a shield from the rule of law.”

An official statement from the U.S. diplomatic mission emphasizes that the cross-border pursuit of cybercriminals and the dismantling of cryptocurrency money-laundering channels directly fulfill the current U.S. administration's priorities.

According to experts, this case reinforces a practice under which the FBI disregards geographical borders and sovereign jurisdictions in order to control illicit capital flows.
