  • UAE and Swedish authorities arrested 7 suspects in an international money-laundering ring.
  • The group laundered $7.1M in illicit funds over 10 months, funneling money between criminal networks.
  • Crypto tracing and digital evidence linked the laundered funds to violent crimes.

In a joint operation, authorities in the UAE, in coordination with Swedish officials, arrested a Swedish national suspected of running an international money-laundering network. The move coincided with the arrest of six other alleged members of the group in Sweden.

The UAE Ministry of Interior says the suspect had left Sweden and was wanted under an INTERPOL Red Notice for suspected money laundering.

Investigators found that the group moved about SEK 70 million (roughly $7.1 million) over 10 months. The money supposedly consisted of cash proceeds from criminal activity that got passed along to other criminal groups.

Crypto Tracing Helped Investigators

So far, officials havent said which cryptos or platforms were used, but said the crypto trail became a key part of the case.

The UAE Ministry of Interior said that tracing the crypto transactions and analyzing digital evidence helped investigators link the money to other crimes, including organized crime and contract killings.

Interestingly, the arrests also show how countries are working together more and more to track crypto money across borders. Investigators used shared intel, searches, surveillance, and financial analysis to track down the suspect and piece together the network.

Crypto Is Still Vulnerable to Crime

Meanwhile, regulators worldwide keep warning that organized crime can exploit crypto, particularly when funds move through self-custody wallets, offshore services, or other parts of the ecosystem that arent well supervised.

Back in July, the Financial Action Task Force underlined new crypto risks that include organized crimes growing use of crypto scams, stablecoins, P2P transfers through self-custody wallets, and offshore crypto service providers.

The international organization said crypto-related crime has become tightly linked and more sophisticated over the past year, with criminals exploiting regulatory gaps to move billions in illegal funds through the crypto world.
