Volkswagen Approves Future Plan 2030 With 50,000 Job Cuts

요약:Volkswagen approved 50,000 more job cuts. Four German plants face phase-out from 2031 and shares closed 7.9% higher.

Volkswagen‘s supervisory board signed off on a plan that cuts 50,000 more jobs across the group. The reductions double a workforce program already running at Europe’s largest carmaker.

The German automaker announced the decision on Thursday. It also plans to shrink its model range by roughly 50% by 2035 and lift profitability.

Volkswagen Sets 2030 Targets While Four Plants Face Uncertainty

The Future Plan 2030 passed unanimously and reached management ranks as well as factory floors.

“According to the analysis underlying the Future Plan 2030, a Group-wide workforce adjustment of approximately 50,000 positions – including management roles – will be necessary,” the firm said.

The firms 12 initiatives target annual sales of 9 million vehicles and an operating margin of 9% by 2030. That margin equals an operating result of about EUR 31 billion. The group earmarked EUR 135 billion for capital spending and research between 2027 and 2031.

Volkswagen also acknowledged that European capacity exceeds demand by more than 500,000 units. Production for the Emden, Zwickau, Hanover, and Neckarsulm plants cannot currently be secured from 2031 to 2034.

A concept for European production is due by the end of June 2027. The company gave no timing for the workforce reduction or its distribution across brands.

CEO Oliver Blume framed the vote as a strong signal for the future.

August Job Cuts Jumped 58% Across US Employers

The decision lands amid a wider US layoff wave. According to Challenger, Gray & Christmas, employers announced 52,881 reductions last month, up 58% from July. The count still marked the quietest August since 2022 and fell 38% against a year earlier.

Restructuring drove 16,173 of those cuts, the largest share since January. Consumer products led by sector at 10,057, ahead of food at 7,982 and technology at 6,103.

Artificial intelligence explained 3,462 August cuts, the lowest reading since December 2025. The technology sector remains a leading cause of layoffs this year, with 116,175 reductions, or 22% of the total.

Employers logged 12,325 hiring plans in August, down 23% from July but far above last year. Whether those roles get filled will test how much slack the US labor market still carries.
