Bitcoins recovery faces rising derivatives exposure and $643 million in ETF outflows

요약:Bitcoins recovery faces a leverage test as selected derivatives exposure rises and ETF redemptions leave sustained buying unproven ahead of US payrolls.

Bitcoin was near $77,000 on October 31 after the selloff around the Binance breach. If youre now thinking about assessing a recovery, the first thing to look at is whether demand returns without another expansion in outstanding derivatives positions. Forced closures removed positions during the shock, yet a later provider reading showed selected Bitcoin exposure higher in dollar terms.

Bitcoin traded at $77,367 on Saturday morning, October 31. Later that morning derivatives showed higher dollar exposure over its 24-hour comparison, while the last completed US spot ETF session recorded redemptions. That makes the composition of any recovery more consequential than the price level alone.

Liquidations closed positions, but exposure remained

Block Scholes, a crypto derivatives data provider, reported $1.53 billion in crypto-wide liquidations over 24 hours in its October 30 note, with 84% in long positions. Those figures describe forced closures across crypto, rather than Bitcoin alone. They also belong to the notes reporting window, rather than an October 31 tally.

The same report said open interest on Binances BTC-USDT perpetual held steady through the initial drop before rising 4.5% between 23:00 UTC October 29 and 04:00 UTC October 30. That is a narrower observation than a market-wide leverage reset: it concerns one contract on one exchange.

Open interest measures positions still outstanding. Liquidations describe positions forced shut. New positions can be opened while other traders are being closed out, so a large liquidation total and continued outstanding exposure can coexist.

Each open contract has a long and a short side. The reported 4.5% increase concerns Binances BTC-USDT perpetual and comes without an absolute starting level or a specified unit of exposure.

Coinalyzes Bitcoin open-interest page, captured October 31 at 10:40 UTC, displayed $28 billion in aggregate exposure, up 3% over its 24-hour comparison. Its coverage combines selected BTC/USD, BTC/USDT and BTC/USDC contracts, expressed in dollar notional value.

That broadens the view beyond the Binance perpetual observation, but it is a separate dataset and window. The two readings cannot be stitched into one continuous measure of positions opened after the shock. Coinalyze does not give an explicit observation timestamp on the page and warns that its chart is not updated in real time.

Dollar notional introduces another distinction. A change in the dollar value of open interest does not isolate changes in contract quantities from changes in valuation. It is also neither posted collateral nor the multiple of exposure carried against that collateral.

The later provider reading consequently shows higher selected dollar exposure, rather than evidence of a broad contraction. It cannot establish exactly how much leverage traders carry or where another price move would force them out. For holders judging the recovery, that makes restraint in subsequent exposure a meaningful signal to watch.

Funding relief leaves exposure unanswered

Funding offers a second view of positioning, but it does not measure how many contracts remain open. Binance describes funding as periodic payments between long and short position holders designed to keep perpetual prices anchored to spot. Positive funding means longs pay shorts; negative funding reverses the payment.

Block Scholes said Bitcoin funding on Binance fell toward zero but remained positive during the shock. That points to a change in the payment for holding the perpetual, not proof that outstanding positions or margin risk disappeared.

In the later October 31 capture, Coinalyze displayed current Bitcoin funding of +0.01% for Binance‘s USDT contract and +0.0065% for Bybit’s USDT contract. The provider normalizes those rates to eight hours. They are page readings, rather than evidence of synchronized settlements across the two venues.

Positive funding alone is not a warning that a new liquidation wave is imminent. The more useful test is how funding develops alongside price and exposure. If a recovery increasingly requires longs to pay more while outstanding positions expand, that would weaken the case for demand doing the work. Restrained exposure and funding that does not become more expensive for longs would be a more reassuring combination.

The last completed US fund session offered little reassurance from that demand channel. According to Farside Investors, US spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded net outflows of USD 643 million in the October 30 session.

ETF flows and liquidation totals cover different instruments, scopes and windows. CryptoSlates earlier analysis of ETF flows and liquidations made the same distinction: a fund-session tally is no standing guarantee against margin-driven closures.

What would improve the recovery case is persistence rather than a single reassuring number. A return of ETF inflows would strengthen that demand channel, while sustained directional spot buying beyond the funds would offer broader support.

The demand test ahead of payrolls

The Bureau of Labor Statistics schedules the October 2026 Employment Situation release for November 6 at 8:30 a.m. Eastern time, also confirmed in its November calendar. That puts a scheduled test of economic expectations ahead of a recovery whose demand and exposure still need to be assessed together.

Its possible transmission runs through expectations for interest rates and financial conditions. The Federal Reserves explanation of monetary policy links labor-market conditions to its mandate and expected short-term rates to borrowing costs and asset prices.

If the jobs report prompts investors to expect tighter financing, a recovery built on expanding exposure would face a less forgiving backdrop. A repricing toward easier conditions could help risk appetite, but would still leave the question of who is buying and how much outstanding exposure accompanies the move.

For now, the price near $77,000 offers a reference point, not a measure of collateral strength. The recovery would look more durable if sustained spot demand arrived while exposure stayed restrained and funding avoided a fresh increase in cost for longs. If positions rebuild without that demand, calmer trading would leave leverage risk unresolved.
