XRP Ledger Set to Boost Institutional Controls on October 5

  • Permission delegation allows accounts to grant limited, revocable authority.
  • Validators must maintain 80% support throughout the entire voting period.

The XRP Ledger is nearing activation of a feature that would grant businesses and financial institutions more precise control over their blockchain accounts, without having to reveal their main keys.

On September 21, the PermissionDelegationV1_1 amendment started a 14-day countdown to activation after 29 of the XRP Ledgers 35 trusted validators backed it. If support holds above the required level, the upgrade could activate on October 5.

Permission delegation lets an account owner give another account limited power to carry out specific actions on their behalf. Instead of giving an employee, automated system, or operational wallet full control, the owner can hand out specific permissions and change or cancel them later.

For instance, a financial company could keep its main keys offline while letting a separate online account handle everyday payments or compliance work.

According to the XRP Ledger, delegates can get up to 10 permissions. However, some sensitive ones cant be handed off, like permissions that would let a delegate change keys or grant even more authority.

This XRPL setup could be especially useful for stablecoin issuers and other regulated businesses.

An issuer may split up the work, letting one system handle everyday transactions while the keys that control the main account stay separate.

XRPL specifically points to compliance use cases like authorized trust lines, where an issuer might have to approve customers after running checks such as KYC.

The current proposal is also a second attempt at adding permission delegation, as the original version was disabled after developers found a serious bug.

As such, the validator countdown serves a key function in the protocols evolution, since XRP Ledger upgrades need ongoing support, not just one vote.

At least 80% of the trusted validators have to keep supporting the change the entire time it is up for a vote. If support dips below that mark, the countdown starts all over again.

That being said, this recent development shows once again that Ripple and XRPL are putting a lot more focus on building financial tools for big institutions and banks.

While the permission delegation wont automatically make banks or stablecoin issuers jump onto XRPL, it does solve a real problem they run into when moving controlled financial processes onto a public blockchain.
