Steel Mills Drive Higher Quarterly Earnings

Nucor reported second-quarter 2026 net earnings of $1.16 billion, or $5.04 per diluted share. Adjusted net earnings reached $1.11 billion, or $4.84 per diluted share, excluding a non-cash investment benefit. The results improved from $743 million, or $3.23 per diluted share, reported during the first quarter.

The company also exceeded the prior-year period by a wide margin. Second-quarter 2025 net earnings totaled $603 million, or $2.60 per diluted share. Higher steel prices and stronger shipment volumes supported the year-over-year increase across major operations.

Steel mills generated earnings before taxes of $1.56 billion during the quarter. That result increased from $1.13 billion in the previous quarter. Earnings also advanced from $843 million reported during the same period last year.

Segment Growth Supports Strong Financial Position

The steel products segment posted earnings before taxes of $353 million during the quarter. The figure increased from $276 million in the first quarter because shipment volumes improved. Stable realized pricing also supported stronger operating performance across fabricated steel products.

The raw materials segment reported earnings before taxes of $146 million. That result rose from $45 million in the previous quarter as selling prices and shipments increased. Corporate eliminations partially reduced consolidated segment earnings during the reporting period.

Total earnings before income taxes and noncontrolling interests reached $1.63 billion. That compared with $1.10 billion during the first quarter and $899 million one year earlier. In addition, a $130 million reduction in steel mill production costs further strengthened quarterly profitability.

Capital Returns Continue as Third Quarter Outlook Improves

Nucor also recorded a $61 million non-cash pre-tax benefit from its investment in fusion energy company Helion. The valuation increased after Helion completed a capital financing round during the quarter. Consequently, adjusted earnings excluded that accounting gain to present operating performance separately.

The company ended the quarter with $2.69 billion in cash, cash equivalents, and short-term investments. Its $2.25 billion revolving credit facility remained unused and extends through March 2030. Nucor also retained the strongest credit ratings among North American steel producers.

During the quarter, Nucor repurchased approximately 1.53 million shares at an average price of $228.76 each. The company returned about $479 million through buybacks and dividends during the quarter. Management expects higher third-quarter earnings as steel pricing and shipment volumes continue improving across major product categories.
