Polkadot Launches Parachains

The first five parachains went live on Polkadot over the weekend. This weekend, Polkadot achieved a new milestone in its roadmap for increasing the scalability of its network. The first parachains—run by Acala Network, Moonbeam, Parallel Finance, Astar, and Clover—went live on the Polkadot network. A parachain is a kind of individual, sovereign blockchain running on top of Polkadot. Polkadot aims for efficiency so that transactions dont compete against all other smart contracts in the same ecosystem. Parachains also mitigate the need for networks to rely on layer-2 scaling solutions to reduce congestion. In simple words, it is as if your favorite decentralized application had a blockchain of its own. This is why Polkadot is defined as a “Layer Zero” protocol: parachains would be the actual layer 1 blockchains (like Bitcoin or Ethereum) running in parallel over a common backbone. Initially, Polkadot will offer support for 100 parachains. Allocations will be made through auctions that will guarantee a slot for up to 96 weeks. The next auction will be held on December 23, 2021, when six new parachains will be allocated. The official launch of parachains is the culmination of a developer effort followed enthusiastically by the community. Shortly after Polkadot developers announced the successful deployment

The Biggest Winners and Losers of the Crypto Industry in 2021

El Salvadors Bukele arguably brought some 21st-century innovation and luster to a poor Central American land heavily dependent on remittances. The cryptocurrency and blockchain industry experienced explosive growth in 2021, particularly in its decentralized finance (DeFi) and nonfungible token (NFT) sectors. The year was also marked by continued price volatility, baffling behavior from China, a grand experiment in Central America, escalating institutional interest, and the rise of some faster smart-contract networks — all of which is reflected in this years list of industry “winners and losers.” Winners in 2021 Kazakhstan When China effectively banned Bitcoin (BTC) mining operations in May 2021, Kazakhstan rushed in to fill the vacuum, pitching displaced miners and others on its cheap and plentiful coal supply. Many set up operations in the Central Asian country, including a top-five crypto mining pool operated by BIT Mining. By July 2021, Kazakhstan‘s average monthly hash rate share stood at 18.1% — that is, it accounted for nearly a fifth of the world’s Bitcoin mining output, second only to the United States (42.7%), and a stunning increase from only 1.4% in September 2019, according to the Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance. Whether Kazakhstan will maintain its global share of BTC mining in 2022, given reports of

Ethereum Launches Kintsugi Testnet to Prepare for Merge

The blockchains mainnet and beacon chain are expected to merge in the first half of 2022. Ethereum has launched its Kintsugi testnet, the latest step toward replacing its Proof-of-Work consensus mechanism with Proof-of-Stake. Kintsugi Is a Step Toward Proof-of-Stake Ethereum Foundation member Tim Beiko posted today that the Kintsugi testnet is now live. Though little will change for app developers, they and others are encouraged to use the testnet. “The Kintsugi testnet provides the community an opportunity to experiment with post-merge Ethereum and begin to identify any issues,” Beiko wrote in his announcement. Kintsugi helps prepare for Ethereum 2.0‘s “merge.” The merge will combine Ethereum’s current mainnet, which handles transactions, with Ethereum 2.0‘s beacon chain, which handles staking. If successful, this will replace Ethereum’s Proof-of-Work consensus mechanism with Proof-of-Stake, effectively ending the energy-intensive process of mining. Though there have been shorter-lived “ephemeral devnets,” Beiko says that the Kintsugi testnet will be longer-lived. It appears that the testnet went live several days before it was widely announced, as early as Thursday, Dec. 16. Merge Will Occur in First Half of 2022 Ethereum 2.0 went live in December 2020 with “Phase 0.” This step involved the launch of the beacon chain, which introduced staking as a means of generating rewards for

Marvel fans blast the use of Stan Lee's Twitter to promote NFTs

Fans say Stan Lees legacy has been defiled through the shilling of NFTs. Tuesday this week saw a tweet from the official Stan Lee Twitter promoting a new collection of Chakra The Invincible NFTs. “From championing diversity to embracing new tech, Stan was 1 step ahead of the curve. To honor his innovative spirit, Stans 1st Indian hero, Chakra The Invincible, debuts in his own NFT (digital art) collection from 7:30pm PT 12/27-12pm PT 12/29! Sign up: http://chakraverse.io” Lee died of cardiac arrest with respiratory failure aged 95 in November 2018. Before then, speculation over the state of his health was mounting. Most notably, in 2017, after canceling two major convention appearances due to an undisclosed illness. His son, Roy, described him as “one of the most important myth makers of the 20th century,” Lees legacy includes turning a humble family-run business called Timely Publications into the multimedia Marvel Comics juggernaut today through his creative talent. However, some Marvel fans have blasted the use of Lees Twitter to drum up interest in Chakra NFTs. This, they say, “disrespects” his name. Chakra The Invincible NFTs are coming soon Compared to the likes of The Hulk, Spiderman, and Iron Man, Chakra is one of Lees lesser-known characters. “Created in 2012

Dogecoin Blockchain Marks Its First-Ever NFT Minting

Dogecoin, one of the most recognizable names in the crypto space, has made remarkable strides with the minting of the first-ever NFT on the blockchain. The project has been moving forward in recent times with more use cases to speak of and now, a developer has just added NFT minting capabilities to that list. It is a big leap from being a ‘joke’ project to being a major player in the space. Minting NFTs On Dogecoin Blockchain A developer that goes by the name Inevitable360 on Twitter officially became the first person to mint an NFT on the Dogecoin blockchain after posting a screenshot of the transaction on Monday. Inevitable360 made a splash with this tweet after proving that it was essentially possible to mint NFTs on a blockchain that is not a smart contracts platform. The transaction only cost 0.1 Doge to carry out, an incredibly small fee compared to the cost of minting NFTs on other blockchains. The developer added that they were waiting for Dogecoin Core developers to actually confirm that what they posted actually worked. Being able to mint NFTs on a blockchain like the Dogecoin blockchain will no doubt be a game-changer as it will be significantly cheaper to

World’s biggest douchebag releases NFT collection

Forget all the hype over genuinely revolutionary technology and creative magic. Douchebags are here to ruin the NFT party for everyone! Around the world, douchebags are getting into NFTs in a big way. Now its true that there are thousands and thousands of legitimate artists in the growing non-fungible token space, and that precisely none of them are Paris Hilton. And sure, NFTs are a potentially world-changing phenomenon that were just declared ArtReviews most powerful entity in the art world, though probably not as a result of the “catastrophic failure” that resulted in John Cena selling just 37 sad copies of a one thousand-NFT drop. There may indeed be all kinds of use-cases for NFTs — such as the censorship-proof preservation of historical records — that will cause future generations to wonder why it took us so long. But don‘t let any of these important developments detract from the absolute douchebaggery that’s currently being unleashed on the world by people like Jacob Chansley. You remember Jacob, right? This guy. Yep, the guy who participated in an insurrection designed to prevent the certification of a duly-elected President in a peaceful democracy has released a talentless, money-grabbing, opportunistic-weasel collection of excruciating tat, hoping to cash in on his brief

Binance Debuts "Project Shield"

Binances ecosystem has been vulnerable to several security concerns in the past, which Project Shield could help investors avoid. Binance Ecosystem Security Gets an Upgrade Binance has announced a new initiative, Project Shield, on Dec. 14. Project Shield will be the first-ever audit program designed to review tokens listed on cryptocurrency exchanges. This initiative will support projects to improve on any existing vulnerabilities that might arise from the audit, which adds an extra layer of protection for investors interested in BEP-20 and ERC-20 standard tokens listed on the Binance exchange. “With the increased interest in the market and the profitability of crypto investments, the number of people ‘apeing’ has increased. Investing without proper knowledge and enough research is risky, but through Project Shield, we believe that Binance can be one of the first hurdles that projects have to overcome before they approach users,” stated the CEO of Binance, Changpeng Zhao, more commonly known as CZ, in the official blog about the announcement. “Furthermore, with the increased standards of security for projects, we believe that the industry will get healthier, which will allow for greater mass adoption in the near future,” Project Shield aims to protect users and provide access to secure projects with evaluations

Kraken Is Planning an NFT Marketplace

The company will be among the largest cryptocurrency exchanges to do so. Kraken founder and CEO Jesse Powell has revealed that his exchange will soon support non-fungible tokens (NFTs). Kraken Is Planning NFT Marketplace “We‘re working on an NFT platform right now to give investors exposure to the burgeoning NFT market,” Powell stated during an interview with Bloomberg’s Emily Chang on Tuesday. Powell also drew attention to the “tremendous amount of activity recently around NFTs…related to various Metaverses.” He noted that this category includes NFTs for virtual worlds, such as land parcels, digital clothing, and proof-of-membership tokens. This includes projects from Metaverse-focused companies like Meta and The Sandbox as well as from partners like Pepsi and Adidas. “We think this is going to get to be a bigger and bigger thing and…we want to be in front of that for people,” Powell said. In September, Kraken published a research report suggesting that NFTs were responsible for 49% of gas burnt, making them the “main attraction on Ethereum.” It also recently published a broader overview of the technology. Other Exchanges Have Embraced NFTs Other crypto exchanges have previously taken advantage of NFT trading. FTX launched its own NFT marketplace in October and expanded to support Ethereum NFTs this month. Binance,
