Hacking Costs Beanstalk Stablecoin Protocol $80M

Beanstalk, a developing Ethereum stablecoin system, has emerged as the latest blockchain business to experience a hacker intrusion, resulting in a catastrophic $80 million loss from the platform. Peckshield, a blockchain security and data analytics firm, originally reported the attack on Twitter before confirming it. The Beanstalk Farms team acknowledged the attack and stated that it is investigating the situation and would notify the community as soon as feasible. While Peckshield estimated the loss to be roughly $80 million, it included an allowance that may effectively increase the losses. It is estimated that a total of 24,830 ETH and 36 million BEAN tokens were lost. Hacks and exploits have become prevalent, particularly in Decentralized Finance (DeFi) protocols. This year, the value of cybercrime employing these protocols has surpassed $1 billion, and further exploits are suspected to be in the works. The Beanstalk team stated that they are in communication with as many partners as possible, and an appeal has been issued in a second tweet to Centralized Exchanges to assist in limiting the attackers ability to use the monies stolen. “Were engaging all efforts to try to move forward. Twitter's 'The Rights Plan' Responds to Elon Musk's Takeover Bid

In the latest twist in the relationship between Tesla CEO Elon Musk and microblogging network Twitter, Twitters board of directors has voted to activate the Rights Plan in response to Musks $43 billion proposal to buy over the platform and take it private. The announcement was made last Friday to the US Securities and Exchange Commission. The Rights Plan, colloquially known as the Poison Pill, is a defensive tactic used by businesses in the event of a hostile acquisition. Its been around for decades and has been proven to work. The technique is being used to counter Musks unsolicited acquisition proposal. When an individual or corporation, in this example, Musk, buys more than a 15% ownership in a deal that has not been approved by the board, Twitter is forced to flood the market with its shares without its permission. As a result, shareholders can acquire more shares at a bargain while also neutralizing his shares and maintaining the board in control in the event of an unsolicited takeover. The strategy will be in effect until April 14, 2023. The boards approach will reduce the likelihood of an individual or company gaining control of the platform through open market accumulation without paying a control

Development in XRP Lawsuit As SEC Decides To End Discovery Phase With Ripple

A popular attorney who tracks and analyzes the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commissions (SEC) lawsuit with Ripple says that the top regulator has made an unexpected decision in their suit. The SEC sued Ripple in late 2020 under allegations that the payments firm sold XRP as an unregistered security. Attorney Jeremy Hogan says that he couldn‘t be more surprised by the SEC’s decision to end its discovery process, which is the point in a lawsuit where both parties exchange information otherwise not known or readily available. Almost NOTHING would have surprised me more than this. And yes, this is a very good thing. The only remaining areas of delay are the appeal regarding the Hinman emails and in general, just scheduling. SEC discovery is complete, and thats a big step forward. The Hinman emails that Hogans referring to involve documents relating to former SEC Director William Hinman, who Ripple alleges had a conflict of interest during his involvement in the beginning stages of the lawsuit. Hinman also made a speech in 2018 in which he stated Ethereum (ETH) was not a security. At the same time, the SEC has requested more time to file its objection against Judge Sarah Netburn‘s decision to overrule the regulator’s request to negate

No, Cryptocurrency Is Not Causing Any Ransomware Surge

Christian Devolu of Vice claims that cryptocurrency has fundamentally altered the way cybercrime is perpetrated. Previously, hackers used ransomware to steal money from big organizations; now, he claims, they are demanding cryptocurrency as payment. Crypto, he says, spawned the ransomware crisis. What is the difference between cryptocurrency and ransomware? On the other hand, the US Department of the Treasury this month produced a series of publications examining various areas of money laundering and terrorism financing. Despite the numerous risks involved with illicit financial operations, like money laundering and ransomware, they continue to feel that traditional networks and currencies are more prevalent in these areas. Vice examined 40 ransom payments made via money transfers between 2014 and this years January. The majority of the funds were transferred via Western Union and MoneyGram, with transactions handled by lesser-known organizations such as Ria and Wal-Mart. According to their estimations, Mexican criminal organizations have earned over $800 million over the last decade by kidnapping migrants. Additionally, money-transfer providers have been receiving a percentage of each transaction. The costs that individuals pay to be smuggled into the United States are frequently less than the ransom they would pay. American businesses also benefit from these arrangements by profiting from the coyotes.
